Trim tabs on CD 28 200HP diesel

Post by Ben Brewster »

I am considering tabs to hold the bow down at higher speeds, like 12-14 K. I have seen some in boats on the hard and wonder what anybody has found. If it works, it could save a bit of fuel.

Hi Ben, My FBC, #221, has trim tabs. Above about 8 kn they will start to help and at full cruise speed they do a good job of holding down the bow. As far as fuel usage, I don't know about that.

This is an interesting subject Ben. I have often wondered about this my own self. I haven't seen a 28 with tabs, but, why not. We have the 165 hp diesel and the bow still comes up after 8 knots. It will be interesting to read the comments. Thanks for bringing it up.

I have trim tabs on my CD open fisherman which flattens my wake at 8 to 10 knots and improves steering cosiderably in most sea conditions. Hope this is helpful.......Dave

I'm happy with my trim tabs on my CD 28 as they do make difference at high speeds. The only problem is keeping them clean as I am in a high "nutritional" area for barnicle growth.

Ben you might check www.yachtsurvey.com/powerboat-trim.htm Its got some good background on tabs.My Chrysler powered 28 goes over the "hump"at about 13 Knots which is where I tend to cruise. My boat apparently had tabs on at one time but they are no longer there. You might ask the diesel owners about their props. You could be pitched a little high.
