CD27 Painting Topside how much? $

I'm thinking about hiring a proffesional to paint my top sides (from toerail up) and redo the non skid areas. any idea what this might cost? or any recomendations I should look or ask for?? Thanks in advance!!!

Before you jump into painting you might do a little research into having your topsides "wet-sanded". This is an option for boats that have nice thick gel coat layers and of course Cape Dory's do. I recently purchased an older CD36 that needed some cosmetics and one of the things I was considering was a professional paint job. The yard manager suggested the "wet-sanding"......he said "once you paint, you are committed to paint, but gelcoat's for ever". So we did a test section of wetsanding and it looked great..... almost new. After a couple of coats of wax it looked like new. If you think the "wet-sanding" is an atractive alternative, you will also like the price. If done professionally, it is much less expensive than a professional paint job.....by about a third. I was quoted 6k for a paint job and the wet-sanding was 1.8k. Keep in mind that this is for a '36 boat, done at a professinal yard at professional rates and the yard I used is one of the best in my area.....so not the cheapest. A smaller boat will of course be less expensive. Non-skid will probably cost you about 2k to have a good yard do it. The materials are only about $300 and the rest is labor.

How long ago did you have this done and how is it holding up? A badly oxidized boat in my marina with a green hull had this done and it looked like a new paint job. Where are you located-east or west coast?

Freeboard and topsides are sort of one and the same. Freeboard is a measure of the topsides from the water to the sheerline. So I had the topsides of my boat wetsanded which gave the appearance of more freeboard.....not really, but it helped to illustrate.
I had it done only a month ago, but I can't imagine that it will fade. After all it is just like peeling a very minute layer of gelcoat away, revealing a brand new layer of gelcoat. I think they started with #600 wet/dry paper and then went to #800 and then a very fine liquid buffing compound and finally 2 coats of wax.
If I can figure out how to set up a little web page on my server, I'll post some pics.

Thanks for the clarification. What I was trying to ask was, did you have the surfaces on deck and the "house" done where there is no non-skid? These areas are typically the ones that have the worst oxidation due to the horizontal orientation.

So far I have wet-sanded the topsides and painted the non-skid areas of the deck and cabin top. I can't wet-sand the non non-skid areas of the deck and cabin because the previous owner had it painted some time back and it looks like the original color of the gelcoat underneath is a little different then the color of the topsides. It looks like it's almost a very light off-white. Can anyone out there confirm this? I have hull #2 ....a 1979 CD36 that looks like the deck and cabin where not done in "Cape Dory white" but some very light "off-white". Anyway, I'll clean the area as best I can and see how that looks, otherwise I will have to (at some point) repaint that area.

I HAVE BEEN PAINTING DECKS WITH GELCOAT.THIS IS A GOOD WAY TO DO
IT ON THESE BOATS BECUASE IT KEEPS THIM ORIGINAL.IF YOU NEED HELP
MAIL ME. I DO THIS FOR A LIVING. WE HAVE A NEW SYSTEM FOR SPRAYING.
