On Saturday, January 13, Cape Dory Owners from the Carolina's met in Oriental, NC and formed the CDSOA Carolina Fleet. CDSOA officers attending the meeting were John Sill, Commodore, Mitch Bober, Rear Commodore and Leo MacDonald, Director at Large and NE Fleet Captain.
The twenty six attendees, from as far away as Kill Devil Hills and Raleigh, NC listened to talks by John, Leo and a surprise and honored guest, founder of CDSOA, Al Lawton. The talks concerned the founding of the parent organization and how to form a fleet. Included in the information presented were the disposition of the $40.00 dues (mostly newsletter/ insurance expenses) and the advantage of forming a fleet under the CDSOA rather then a separate club.
Following the informal talks by the CDSOA officers, those present voted to form the CDSOA Carolina Fleet and elected Joe Valinoti of Oriental as it's first Fleet Captain. Joe and his wife paula, formally of Highlands, NJ, currently own a CD28 (for sail) and a CD30(C) that they are bringing up to snuff for cruising. Joe is a retired VW/Audi mechanic and a former USN Chief Radioman.

CAROLINA FLEET--Every Best Wish!!
It was a real pleasure (and worth every one of the 860 miles that I drove) to meet with you folks, many of whom are regular correspondents on this website, and to talk Cape Dory. I envy your warm enough to go sailing winters. Good luck to the new fleet.
Fair winds.

Re: CAROLINA FLEET ORGANIZES
Congratulations to the North Carolina fleet!
Having been a member of the CDOA out on San Francisco Bay, I know the fun of the CD gatherings with kindred folks. I sorely miss the boat and the CDOA gatherings back there.
Since selling my CD30, PERI, out in San Francisco, we've moved near little Washington, NC and I am once again back on the water. Not in a CD, but in a Carolina built 21 foot Parker walkaround. Power. The Pamlico, Albemarle and Neuse waters here are wonderful boating waters!
I do see a number of CDs in this area as I wander around, and I always go take a look at them. So, if you see a cream Parker with green canvas with a guy hanging over the side gawking and with tears in his eyes, wave, it's me! Not that I'm not falling in love with my little Parker, built to traditional work boat scantlings and with a traditional sheer, unusual for todays small power boats, the Parker is serving me very well here.
I wish the fleet well and wish you the success of the CDOA!

Re: CAROLINA FLEET ORGANIZES
Joe,
Congratulations and thanks to you, Leo and Al for all your hard work in preparing for the fleet formation and for hosting the meeting. It was a very enthusiastic and friendly affair. I know your new Carolina Fleet is going to have a great time sharing adventures, sailing stories, and each other's company!
See you soon, on the water of course!
John
P.S. Are there other areas who would like to form a Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association Fleet? How about the Lake Michigan area?
