I have been told that these two outboard engines are very similar. Is this in fact so? And, if they are similar, could the high thrust propeller of the Tohatsu be used on the Mercury engine? Alternatively, does Mercury offer a similar high thrust propeller for their engine?
All suggestions, and information, are appreciated.

Mercury also sells a 5hp "Sailpower" but not with an extra long shaft.

The small Mercury outboards are made by Tohatsu, you will find most of the parts are interchangeable. Tohatsu has owner manuals available online and some include a propeller selection table. I'm not sure which manual is the correct one for the "Sail Pro". I'm guessing it is the MFS 6B that you would want to look at.

I also believe the only difference between the 4, 5 and 6 hp models is carburetor jets and the propellers supplied as standard. I didn't check every part number but that was the only thing that jumped out at me when doing a quick scan of the parts manuals. (You can find parts manuals online for Tohatsu engines from parts dealers.)
I could not find any Mercury manuals online.
I do know that the Yamaha "High Thrust" outboards are geared differently than the standard outboards. I do not believe that is true for the Tohatsu and Mercury.

The Mercury is a rebadged Tohatsu. The high thrust prop from the Sailpro can be used on any Tohatsu, Mercury or Nissan in the 4 - 6 hp range.

My 9.9 Yamaha high thrust in my boat does have a much larger foot for the different gear set which turns the larger diameter, shallower pitch 3 bladed prop, which also helps make it very heavy. I can also tell you with the electric starter, it is like 100 pounds and NOT portable. I am envious of the Tohatsu's lower weight.

I have a tohatsu 6 sailpro. Mercurys are rebranded tohatsu with a few minor non mechanical changes. They are simple reliable motors. Other than 25 inch shaft nothing special about them. Same 2.15 gear case.
No reason to buy merc unless you want to spend more money.
I like mine but I would traded for a high thrust yami in a heartbeat. That 2.9 gears and an 11 inch wheel makes a huge difference.
