Outboard shaft length CD25

I'm in the process of replacing my old Johnson 9.9 on my CD25. I would like to buy a Mercury 8, however the logest shaft available is 20". Does anyone have experience with this motor in the engine compartment of a CD25? How is the shaft length measured?

Jim

I recently installed a 20" shaft Yamaha in my CD26. I measured the distance from the top of the engine mount in the engine locker down to the water. Then I applied that measurement to an actual engine before I bought it. The shaft length turned out to be perfect - the waterline on the engine is a few inches above the anticavitation plate, which is right where the book says it should be. I would think yours would be very similar. Good Luck.

I am not sure how the shaft length is measured, but I have an 8 HP Mariner (same engine only silver instead of black) on our CD25 "Lucille". We never have a problem with the prop coming out of the water and the engine has plenty of power. I am thinking of changing the prop to a high thrust unit as there is not enough power in reverse. The only thing I don't like is that the engine hatch has to be open for the tiller handle to stick straight up when running (remote lever controls would eliminate this problem) and the power head is too high for the cover to close completely. SailorJon's home page has some good info on CD25 engine choice.

I put a 15" on Sovereign. After lowering the mount a bit, it looks like this.

Ron,

That finish is 3 coats of regular Cetol laid on a few years ago. I touch it up each spring with light hand sanding and one more coat. The touch up is nearly year old in that photo.
