Lifeline stanchion hole sleeve

Post by Jim Walsh »

I know this may appear perfunctory but it may save you from needlessly searching for a easy solution also.
I replaced my coated wire lifelines a year ago. They were original and showed all the telltale signs of hidden corrosion. My choice was to go with uncoated 1X19. Now I don't have to use my x-ray vision to inspect my lifelines and risk exposing my true identity
I had asked the rigger who made up my lifelines what is used in the stanchions to make up for the reduced diameter of the replacement lifelines. He said he used to stock plastic inserts but the kept falling out so they fell out of common usage. I figured I'd find something to make a sleeve out of which didn't need frequent replacing.
I ended up with standard 5/16 fuel line hose. I just cut a piece the diameter of the stanchion, trimmed a wedge lengthwise and tucked it in place. If you are careful not to cut the wedge oversized you have a bit of a pressed fit and they are held in place by friction.
I've only had one start to slip out (it never actually fell out) in the last year so I figured I'd document the replacement for those who are,or may be, in the process of replacing their lifelines.

Nice little project, Jim. Our lines are on the list for this winter. I just happen to have a coil of fuel line.
