Repairing Hairline Cracks in Deck /Best Hull Cleaner

Post by STEVE »

What's the best way to repair/fill the hairline cracks that appear in the fiberglass on deck and around the cockpit sole? Should they be left alone or can you fill them without having to paint afterwards? Also, what is the best hull and deck cleaner for getting stains off the fiberglass, such as leaf stains, black marks, white chaulking, etc. prior to waxing? There are so many products on the market, and many I've tried do little or nothing. All claim to be good, but they don't deliver. Someone recommended 409 cleaner, but this did nothing. Also, what's a good wax to use on the hull? Appreciate any recommendations based on your experience and satisfaction.

We use a product called Emergel, which works well. It is made by Emery Coatings Pty Ltd Australia. It works on fibreglass and stainless steel such as the railings and windgear. It is made in New Zealand by Emkem Industries. Sorry no contact address on the container. I have used this for years with good results.

Steve:

Search the Archives for Dana Arenius' reports of his successful experiments with gelcoating hairline cracks. There are several installments, and they cover both white as well as tan non-skid repair. I am planning to use his advice to do some crack repair of my own this spring.

One of the best things for removing stains from the hull is toliet bowl cleaner. It even works great on the brown stains around the water line. A little bit on a wet sponge goes a long way and gloves are a good idea.

I had great luck with 3M Paste Wax. I used an orbitor polisher to apply and remove the wax.
