New Cape Dory Owner

Post by Capt Hook »

I am a new Cape Dory owner. I have been reading this forum for several weeks and just bought a Cape Dory 31. It is still in Texas and I'm looking forward to getting her to her new home port, New Orleans. Looking forward to meeting other Cape Dory owners.

Please post something on your return to New Orleans, Hook. I think of getting a Cape Dory somewhere on the Atlantic side and bringing it through to the Pacific side. Any info is valuable to me. Congrats on the boat! David, the San Juan Archipelago

David, I only have to get the boat from just above Corpus Christi, TX to New Orleans. I don't have to go from Pacific to Atlantic. In fact not even to Atlantic, just along the Gulf Coast.

Congratulations on your new CD31! You'll find her a solid and reliable boat, fun to sail and classic looking. In addition, this Board is full of great expertise and helpful experience. Post some pictures so we can all "ooooh" and "ahhhhh" !

It's very important to divulge whether or not you lock your prop when under sail.
Oh yeah, welcome to the CDSOA family. :D

I'm returning to sailing after about a thirty year break in service.

For the last fifteen years my primary pastime has been flying.

Pilots prefer not to lock the prop while participating in that activity.

Jim,

I really enjoyed your thread about your voyage to Bermuda and back. Orion really is a beautiful boat. I hope to get my CD 31 looking like that.

Looking forward to getting the boat to New Orleans next week. Kevin, the previous owner, CDSOA member and veteran of several single handed Gulf crossings has volunteered to help me sail the boat back. Maybe I have that backward since he has ALL the offshore experience on this passage. We'll be offshore from roughly Corpus Christi to Grand Isle, LA and then waterways and the Mississippi River to the Industrial Canal into Lake Pontchartrain. It'll be a learning experience both about the boat and offshore sailing. Should be an interesting trip.

That ought to be exciting. 400nm as the crow flies. All the offshore safety precautions need to be taken but you have a boat built for blue water passages so enjoy the experience.

Congratulations, Captain. I've sailed on a friend's CD31 and enjoyed it very much. The layout below decks is quite nice. I'm a winter resident of New Orleans. Where do you plan to keep the boat?

South Shore Harbor just east of Lakefront Airport.

It's about my only option on the south shore. It's been almost ten years since Katrina and they still don't have a plan to repair Municipal Yacht Harbor and Orleans Marina is full.

Big hint when you approach the N.O. locks contact them on the radio and ask them "how does this work". When you do that they will usually lock you thru by yourself instead of with a massive tow.
