Looking for a hank on jib for 25D

Post by papaver »

Hi there, folks!
My husband and I are the new owners of a well cared for 25D that we purchased late last summer. The sails are quite aged and possibly original, so we had the main replaced over the winter, planning to use the old 100% roller furled jib until we figured out what we wanted.

Unfortunately, on our first sail this season, Thursday afternoon, the halyard swivel assembly sheared in half, rendering it useless. The jib needs replacing anyway, but with the roller furler out of commission and either needing a new swivel assembly ($$) or replacement ($$$), we've had to fast-track our thoughts for what we want.

We typically ascribe to the KISS principle, and although it goes against what it seems many modern sailors want, we'd prefer the simplicity of a hank-on jib to another furler. Plus, our sailmaker was pushing for a radial cut furling jib to replace our current one next year, but that, too, is $$$, especially added to the cost of the furler replacement.

I've been reading a bit on this board about how a roller furled jib is cut differently than a hank on jib. While less than perfect, to get us through this season on our local waters (Penobscot Bay), we are considering adding those nylon screw-on hanks to the jib we currently have (it's possible it was originally hank on and modified for roller furling... we stuffed it down below on Thursday evening and won't have the chance to examine it closely until later today). However, if anyone on this board has an older hank-on 100% (or smaller) jib for a 25D that they are not using and don't plan to, we could be interested in taking it off your hands.

Thanks so much in advance.

Hi Papaver,

I installed a Schaefer roller furler on my cd25d right after I bought her a couple of years ago (it came with the boat). So I've since switched to a RF Genoa. I still have a hank on 135? and a hank on working jib that came with the boat. I would happily donate both to a good cause, (like a fellow Maine new Cd 25d owner). I don't think they are in great condition, but the previous owner was using them before he sold the boat to me. You're welcome to them if you're interested.
Let me know if you want to take a look.

All the best,

Bob

Wow, Bob, that is fantastic! "Not great condition" is probably at least as good as the condition of the current furling jib. We would love to check them out!

We spent the afternoon today disassembling the furler from the bottom up.... drilling out the rivets, and taking it apart section by section. It was the kind of day that made me thankful I chose a handy guy for a mate (I'm the techie, he's more of an old school renaissance man). Although, I'll probably get a hefty yard bill. ;)

Bob, I will be in touch via pm to make arrangements to see these sails of yours. Maybe we won't be sidelined for as long as we had feared!

Thanks,
Liz

Hi Liz
No problem, glad if they can be of use. Just one thing, I pulled out the sails and what I thought was a working jib, is actually a relatively new hank on storm jib (which you are also welcome to). The genoa looks to be on the small side, and was what the PO was sailing with on Lake Superior. PM me with when you would like to take a look at them.

All the best
Bob
