Where is ORION?

Re: Where is ORION?
There was a bank robbery on the island today. They caught the guy at the airport. Seems like the planning may have been a bit flawed......
This was my project for the day. The damn starter cord decided to disintegrate. I put the engine up on the stern rail bracket because I figured the chance of dropping something into the cockpit as opposed to the drink was a little better than if I had performed surgery while it was still on the dingy. I actually managed to remove the recoil starter without losing anything. By having everything I needed close at hand I was able to easily replace the old cord with the replacement while keeping a firm grip on the recoil mechanism and I didn't have to deal with "now how many turns was that" issues. Slapping it all back together without dropping anything was also a pleasure. Now I'm good to go. Yeah

Re: Where is ORION?
The bank robber probably just wanted to go to jail in Bermuda. They used to make the prisoners cut stone but I don't think they have to do that anymore. Being a prisoner in Bermuda doesn't sound like a bad deal. He might have made it onto the plane but he is a winner either way.
Did the weather forecaster apologize when it was supposed to rain? Actually kind of a good deal to get a hard rain right after arrival to wash off the salt.

Re: Where is ORION?
I very much appreciated the hard rain. I'm salt free, topside's that is. As far as being a prisoner on the island goes, I'm betting they ship them back to the British Isles, otherwise people would arrive every day and break some law just to go to prison here.Steve Laume wrote:The bank robber probably just wanted to go to jail in Bermuda. Notice the CDSOA pennant being proudly flown for all these international blue water cruisers to envy? They are awestruck the moment they enter the harbor and realize they are in the presence of a proud member.

Re: Where is ORION?
Hi Jim,
The yacht club that I belonged to before I moved, along with many other clubs, had a policy that showed respect for another club's pennant. It provided mooring and launch service and showers for traveling sailors for overnights up to long weekends. The policy was reciprocal. I was wondering if this was so in Bermuda?
Is this just a local policy or do other yacht clubs in other areas practice this hospitality?
Just wondering.

Re: Where is ORION?
I hear many yacht clubs have reciprocal agreements. Usually they are formal and are extended only to other yacht clubs of a similar status who have the facilities to truly make the agreement reciprocal.
I have also been advised that it doesn't hurt to ask as many yacht clubs have transient moorings which may be available to those who ask nicely.

Great pictures ! Where are you anchored? I want to look it up on Google Earth.
Re: Where is ORION?
I'm in Convict Bay Yacht Anchorage, St. George's Harbour, Bermuda. That's on the northeast corner of Bermuda.moctrams wrote:Great pictures ! Where are you anchored? I want to look it up on Google Earth.
Here's a picture I took yesterday. ORION is dead center in this photo.

Re: Where is ORION?
This is a photo from a couple days ago. There were two squid that spent a couple days hiding out on the lee side of my anchor chain at the 60 foot marker which is a few feet below the surface. In the early morning calm I was able to get a reasonably good photo. If you look closely you can see his stabilizing fins fluttering, his eyes, and his arms tightly clasped into an arrowhead shape.

Re: Where is ORION?
Jim, my friend, you should be cautious about identifying your location as "Convict Bay". There are certain reprobates on this board (you know who you are ) who will take advantage of this to post comments such as "you are certainly anchored in the right place".Jim Walsh wrote:I'm in Convict Bay Yacht Anchorage, St. George's Harbour, Bermuda.
By the way, great photos of the squid. Did you use an underwater camera or yet another one of those cell phone cameras that can do anything, including, on rare occasions, actually making and receiving phone calls. Yikes
You photo posts have made me (and I am sure many on this board) envious of your exploits.

Re: Where is ORION?
I was afraid to use my iPhone exclusively as a camera. Too easy to drop in the water. I bought a Nikon L840 digital camera. It's got wifi built in so I regularly download everything to the net. This way if I were to drop it in the drink or if it were to disappear I'd only be out a reasonable amount of cash and I'd still have the photos cached. (No pun intended) I've also taken several photos with my iPad if I happen to be sitting in the cockpit surfing the web and something interesting comes by. The iPad's also take surprisingly good photos.Sea Hunt Video wrote:Jim Walsh wrote:I'm in Convict Bay Yacht Anchorage, St. George's Harbour, Bermuda.

Re: Where is ORION?
This photo was taken yesterday afternoon. Nearly a millpond out here but beautiful none the less. Several boats chose yesterday to clear the harbor and the majority were on their way to Horta in the Azores. One gent left for home in Orilla, Ontario, after cruising singlehanded for the last seventeen years! This morning a lady singlehander in Speedwell of Hong Kong left for New York to renew her passport. She's been out for a couple years. I'll post photos later after I download them from my camera.

Re: Where is ORION?
Here is a photo of the Aloha 8.2 (26.5') mentioned in my previous post. Brian left yesterday morning and is homeward bound for Orilla, Ontario, after cruising for the last 17 years! He singlehanded the entire way. Some might never consider an Aloha 8.2 a bluewater cruiser but Brian proved that it is.

Re: Where is ORION?
I can't help notice that all of the anchor lines in your photos are nearly vertical (very short scopes). I originally thought these were moorings, but it looks like the anchors are out. What is the anchoring practice down there?

Re: Where is ORION?
Chain rodes can look deceptively short. Most of the time they hang pretty much straight down no matter how much scope you have out, Steve.
