Re: Should I replace this bow plate? CD Typhoon
Hi everyone! Just bought a Typhoon, haven't put it in the water yet, but thought I'd chime in on this photo issue. I might miss a few details here, but hopefully I can summarize it.
When you take a photo with a modern photo-taking device (a recent digital camera, smartphone, tablet, etc) it uses a teeny sensor to determine what the proper orientation of the photo is. If the device is rotated one way or the other when the photo is taken, the software has two options: A) Re-order all the pixels in the image so that it's right-way up, or B) Add a little note to the file (along with all the other EXIF information that gets captured, like shutter speed and date) that says which way is up. Option A) takes time and processing power, so most of the time the camera will go with B).
In theory, everything's taken care of with option B: When the photo is displayed, the displaying program will notice the orientation information and rotate the photo so that "up" is up. But in practice there are programs that will ignore or misinterpret the orientation information, in which case they display the pixels in their default order in the file, and photo comes out tipped or flipped.
In the case of this photo, it looks upside-down to me in the post, but if I right-click on the photo and choose "Open image in new tab" (my browser is Chrome) then I see it right-side up. I'm not quite sure what's happening here, because Chrome clearly knows how to properly display it, but maybe the bulletin board software is somehow re-sizing the photo to fit it in the post, and messing up the orientation along the way.
Long story short: Either your browser or the phpBB bulletin board software is getting confused. If you open the image in a new tab (or download it to your computer and open it in an image viewing program there) you may find that all of a sudden it looks fine.

Ben:
First, welcome to the Cape Dory board and to world of Cape Dory sailboats
As all on this board know, I am old, mostly illiterate and know absolutely nothing about computers, electronic gizmos, etc. When others try to explain computer and website basics to me my eyes gloss over and I reach for a Guinness.
Your explanation of why the photos are upside down was clear, concise and frankly far enough down the tech scale that I actually understood it. You used a couple of words I did not understand or recognize but I understood WHY my computer, and apparently many others, are showing some photos upside down.
I opened the CDSOA website in Google and went to the "offending" photo. I did as you said (right click on show it in another screen) and, BINGO , right side up. Yea
You are my new hero

Jim my friend, how the HE (double hockey sticks) did you do that
Sadly, today is a day I have been assigned to domestic "landside" chores. Woe as me.

Hi Julie,
its just fine and its not to big.
your forstay goes to the forward hole with a clevis pin
and the rear hole is for a down haul with a small block.
thats it, Win

IMO, The elongated holes are of no consequence for the small loads in your boat. I would not be concerned as long as the clevis is closed.
BTW, as agreed above, a real computer may get it upside down as sent, but if you need to, you can save the photo to a file, then rotate it to see it properly, and re-save. Silly cel phones send them out like that all the time.
Best wishes

Thanks everyone. Glad this thread could provide interesting commentary not only about bow plates & clevis pins, but also about the nuances of photo orientation as it pertains to a pretty old discussion board platform...As an aside, does anyone know who administers this platform and whether there's been any effort to update it to something more current? I could be talked into volunteering some time and effort in that direction, as my day job revolves around designing software.
In any case, to the close the loop on this thread: I'm not going to worry about the bow plate this year, but I have since found a metal shop who will close up and re-drill the holes for me when the time comes. Great suggestion.
Happy sailing!
