CD28 jib sheet winches

Post by Margrit Keyes »

My CD28 has winches that have a rubber lining to facilitate
self tailing. The line I am using is too big to fit. The jaw cleats
are also too small. Now I am thinking of replacing the winches. Are
there any special winches for CDs or do I just shop West Marine?
If I went the classic route where would I go?
Thanks.

CD did not have special winches but did use bronze, which is available from Lewmar and perhaps others as special order, I think. We put 30ST Lewmar's on our 28. However, one limiting factor is the size of the bronze winch pad from Spartan, if installed. I've seen some CDs with teak pads, probably retrofit. You need to make sure the diameter of the winch base and drum will fit on the pad and allow freedom to turn. If you use a 150% in decent air, 30s are not too large. West has them all, I think.

;We have the Watski self tailer rubber disks on our CD28 bronze genoa winches and find that the rubber disk is used to hold turns on the winch as the turns squeeze up against the rubber but not trying to use the insert area as a selftailer. We added Schaefer turning blocks which give the installed winches the added purchase and power without the expense of new winches. Also leading the genoa/jib sheet straight aft to a turning block and then to the winch eliminates the problems of varying angles as you move your sheet blocks forward and aft. I mounted the turning blocks onto teak pads that are thru bolted but this area is easily accessed thru your sail lockers. I can scan and send a photo of this modification to you if you'd like to see what it looks like on our CD28. Self tailer two speed winches are nice but the price tag is preety hefty, we like are setup and it only cost about $175!!!
