teak advice

Post by pjust »

I just spent a very pleasant time stripping the flaking Cetol off the toe rail and rub rail of my Ty in preparation for varnishing. I've noticed in a few spots where the Cetol flaked off a while ago that the teak looks bleached. Do I need to do anything (oil?) to these spots before I apply the first coat of varnish?

You should not need oil but a teak cleaner is good to restore the color.

I would not oil the teak. It will interfere with the adhesion of the varnish. I really like Cetol. In fact I spent the day putting clear on the teak of my "other" boat. Stripping Cetol is easy; sharp scraper and a heat gun. A couple of coats and clear on top and you're good for several years.

If you are down to bare wood, but the grain has lifted, what should you do to smooth it down? Sand? Scrape?
