Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts now only $14k
We are selling our 1979 Cape Dory 30 due to having recently purchased a larger cruising sailboat. This boat is in overall good condition and all of the regular maintenance has been done. Cape Dory built high quality boats with good design, good craftsmanship and high quality components. We have really enjoyed sailing the boat an average of 70 days a year between Long Island Sound and the Canadian border. Most of the spring prep work for 2014 has been completed (bottom paint, prop paint, zincs, varnish, new impeller, etc) and the boat is almost ready to go in the water. The remaining tasks such as putting the sails and cushions back aboard will be completed shortly.
Because many people have asked us about the ketch rig, we want to quickly state our thoughts. In terms of sailing performance, we find that the ketch is very slightly slower upwind than the cutter version but slightly faster on all other points of sail. Sailed well, the boat does really nicely for its size and we regularly sail past much larger boats. One of the biggest benefits is that with the mainmast slightly further forwards, an 8’ dinghy fits nicely on the cabin top (we store an 8’3” Walker Bay there and used to put a 9’ inflatable there). We almost always sail on and off the anchor and find that the ketch rig is incredibly handy for this with the extra sail control. In heavy weather, the boat stays nicely balanced without the mainsail up and can be easily hove to with just the mizzen. In most wind conditions, we can trim the sails so that the boat will balance nicely and require no helm input for an hour or more. Plus, we think that the ketch is the best looking Cape Dory in this size range but that is personal preference.
Cape Dory has a wonderful owners association that includes information on the different models and a very active forum. The website can be found at http://www.capedory.org.

The toilet is mounted to port and there is a hanging locker to starboard. The head is separated from the main saloon by another door. In the main saloon, there are settees on each side which convert to bunks for sleeping by flipping up the backrests to make them wider. The port settee pulls out to create a double berth if desired. All of the cushions have been recently replaced. On the starboard forward bulkhead, a Newport Dickinson stove provides heat for sailing in colder weather. There is a nice table which folds down from the bulkhead and comfortably seats 4-6 people. At the aft end of each settee, small folding tables have been added which flip up when desired. The aft end of the cabin is devoted to the galley which has a large icebox, a lot of storage and a two burner stove.

Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts
All of the preparation work for launching is now complete. She is at Essex Marina in a very easy to view location so this is an excellent time to come take a look.
Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts
The boat is now in the water. Please feel free to contact me with questions or if you would like to schedule a showing.
Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts
Just bumping this post. The boat is still available.
Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts
We have now hauled for the season. The boat is available for viewing in Essex, MA. Please contact me if you are interested in viewing it.
Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts
The snow is finally melted enough that Pilgrim is available for viewing again. She is almost ready to go back in the water, the prop and bottom were just painted and the few remaining items will be completed shortly.
Since my last posting, we have lowered the price to $22,000 and listed the boat through David Pearce of Sailboats Northeast. The full listing is at http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1979/Ca ... SQXL-F8PwA
Some of you may remember that we had some engine problems on haulout day last year. We have put a new, used MD7A in the boat. Prior to installation, we had a certified Volvo mechanic go over the engine. Work done on the engine includes basic stuff like changing fluids but also adjusting valves, checking the cooling system and installing a new thermostat.
Pilgrim is a great boat and it is time for her to create many happy memories for a new owner. All reasonable offers will be considered.

Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts
Klem,
You have a nice boat, I sure wish I would have found her before buying my 28 last year. I was wanting a 30 Ketch. Good luck with the sell of your boat.

Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts
We have reduced the price to $19,000.
Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts now only $14k
New price. $14k. We found out unexpectedly that there was not room in the yard for us this summer so we have launched the boat. Due to this change in events, we have dropped the price significantly for a quick sale. Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to see the boat.
Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts now only $14k
Any idea what it would cost to get this to Lake Michigan? Hull out/breakdown/truck or over water ways?
Sincerely,
Chris B.

When Ariel was hauled by truck from Upstate New York to St. Joseph, it was about $1800. That was in 2002. FWIW.
Re: Cape Dory 30 for sale in Massachusetts now only $14k
Unfortunately, I can't give you an exact number but I can give you a ballpark. We had a 36', 17,000lbs boat trucked from Menominee, MI to here last year which was about 1200 miles. I think that I got 4 quotes and they were in the $3-4k range but that is for a much heavier boat that also needed expensive overwidth permits as it has an 11.5' beam. Trucking costs are usually done by the loaded mile so it will depend on the total mileage. Depending on where you are located, I would not be surprised if you could do it for $2-3k not including the crane which I think was another $150 and haulout which is right around $200 for us.ariasis wrote:Any idea what it would cost to get this to Lake Michigan?
