CD28 Weight
Hello. I'm new to this forum, but I need some help. I just purchased a '83 CD28 (Hull 358) and am trying to register it with the USCG, but I think I have some bad data. SailboatData.com shows the displacement to be 9300 lbs. Surely, the boat cannot weigh more than that or it would sink - right? Yet, the previous owner's USCG Certificate of Documentation (and a two-year-old survey) shows:
Gross Wt = 11 Tons (22,000 lb)
Net Wt = 8 Tons (16,000 lb)
I have never owned a boat, so maybe there's something about the specifications that I don't understand. Can anyone help me.
Thank you,
David Ross

This should help you understand.

The tonnage is a measure of volume, not weight.

As Jim says, it's volume, not weight.

Re: CD28 Weight
Hi David - welcome to the Cape Dory extended family. I own an 83' CD 28 with hull number 357, probably built right besides yours. My Coast Guard certificate shows 8GRT and 7NRT. My Certificate also shows length 28.2, Breadth 8.8, Depth 6.8. I didn't do the original calculations but did transfer them over from the previous owner's certificate.
Enjoy your boat, Spartina is a major part of my life.

Wow, great responses! I really appreciate the help.
A question for GeorgeH: Where do you moor Spartina? I haven't chosen the specific marina, yet, but I will be somewhere near Corpus Christi. My original plans were to use the city marina, but it's a very long sail (20NM) from there to blue water. So, I'm now looking for something closer to the Gulf.

Re: CD28 Weight
David- I moor Spartina in Setauket harbor, a small bay which is part of Port Jefferson harbor on Long island, NY. Its a busy harbor, about 2 miles from the LI Sound, and it takes me 30 minutes or longer, depending on the tide to get to open water. Mostly I motor out because of the narrow channel and once in the sound raise the sails. I would opt for being closer to the Gulf and open water.
Re: CD28 Weight
We keep our boat at the City Marina and enjoy the sailing in CC Bay and the adjacent areas. If your desire is to sail the open waters of the Gulf then you most probably should relocate to Port Aransas.I haven't chosen the specific marina, yet, but I will be somewhere near Corpus Christi. You will learn a lot about the tide tables when you are trying to get in or out of the Gulf in the Port A channel. One year during the Harvest Moon regatta the winds were very light almost all of the boats stalled in the channel. The timing was such that almost everyone got to the channel (finish line) just as the tide turned and was dumping everything in the bay back into the gulf. I forgot to check the tide tables once and spent considerable part of one afternoon with full sail and full Yanmar power (almost stalled) making one knot through the jetty channel.
I would caution you that a number of our sailing group have moved to Port A and then returned to the CC City Marina. There are serious rumors of a major rat problem along with other issues at Port A marina treat your lines accordingly.
Have A Nice Day

My 1979 CD28 Mathilda shows same displacement as yours. No issues with USCG documentation.
Three different haulouts have weighed her at ~ 11,000.
Still didn't sink........ A touch low on the waterline, yes, but no worries.

Re: CD28 Weight
Any idea what accounts for the additional ton of displacement? Do you haul with full fuel and water tanks? A combined total of 70 gallons of water and fuel would add 585 lbs. to your designed displacement of 9,000 pounds. A 22% increase in your designed displacement over your measured displacement just seem excessive to me. Don't take this as a form of criticism. I've never had the opportunity to weight my CD31 so it just piques my interest.rorik wrote:My 1979 CD28 Mathilda shows same displacement as yours. No issues with USCG documentation.

One 225' stern rode with 50' of 1`/4" chain
3 anchors
6 sails
Spares for everything
Im an avid reader so.... books
Hand tools
And a FULL cupboard

Re: CD28 Weight
My 28 ft. Cape Dory #227 weighs in at 13000 pounds every time I take it out
of the water on (so far) three different lifts. Now, it is what you have stored
in it that makes it count.
I do carry over 300 feet of chain in the pointy end as well as five batteries, and,
that is just the beginning!
But, it sure sails well with all the weight!

Re: CD28 Weight
The coast guard tonnage is not the weight of the boat....instead it is the volume (minus engine room space) for cargo that determines the amount of weight (cargo) the boat can handle. Thus the number is always greater than the weight.. It is all based on the length, width, and depth numbers. Documentation requires at least 5 tons (CD-25D/CD26 size). The numbers to be used are usually on the original shipwrights (ship carpenter"s) document which was used to first document or register the boat. Usually, if the boat was documented before, you can transfer the boat ownership, keeping the original documentation number. Proof of sale (sales receipt) is necessary.

Re: CD28 Weight
The re-documentation is pretty straight forward.....possible three different forms may be required...
1. Coast Guard CG-1258 Application for new or exchange documentation....must be filled out by new owner
2. Coast Guard CG-1340 transfer of previous documentation to new owner on back of form, notarized by previous owner
3. If a ships mortgage (loan or otherwise) under previous owner exists, Coast Guard can not issue new documentation. Lender and new owner must fill out CG-4593 form to show there is no legal lien on the vessel so the Coast Guard can issue new document without lien.
