Typhoon Main Sheet Deck Block Replacement

Post by jdlomonaco »

I have been refitting my Typhoon #1792 to get back into the water after an 8 year lay out. In the process I found that the sheaves on the rear deck blocks for the main sheet were damaged and one of the springs was also broken. I called Schaefer to see if I could obtain direct replacements. No surprise, they no longer make the original block. The replacement block they suggested would not fit the existing hole pattern, 3 holes vs. 4 holes. I was hesitant to drill new holes and trying to cover old ones. So I did a little research and found that their 03-62 block was similar to the replacement block, but it did not have the stand up spring base. It had a strap attachment point. With a little engineering I fitted the 03-62 to the original base and replaced the springs in the process. Here's how.

First I ground off the rivet head at the attachment point on the existing block base (not the one that holds the sheave in place), punched out the rivet, and removed the side plates and sheave leaving the "U" shaped point of attachment and the rivet spacer in place. I removed the existing spring by cutting it off and replaced it with a Harken 3/4"D X 1"H spring P/N 097 that can be bought online (basically identical to the existing spring, BTW Schaever would not sell me a spring). Replacing it is a little tricky, but you basically screw the spring on over the base "U" and the cup plate below it once the upper parts are removed. Then I drilled out the rivet head at the strap on the new block and punched out that rivet to remove the strap. Using a 1 1/2 " #10 stainless screw, 4 #10 stainless washers and a #10 self locking nut that can be purchased at a hardware store I attached the new side plates and sheave to the existing base. The 4 washers take up just enough space on the outside of the existing "U" base attachment to make a good fit with the new side plates. For good measure I put Locktite on the threads of the screw.

I would post a picture but I don't seem to be able to cut and paste it here.
