Trailering a CD27

Post by Jim Stull »

Just got back home to Western PA last night with our new CD27 project boat. Many thanks to Paul Schultz for the info he posted on this board and his very kind answers to my many questions on the trailer design. Towing was not a big problem but one has to keep one's wits about them! That's a BIG thing trailing along behind!! Our current CD25 follows along like a faithful dog but the CD27 takes up it's full share of the road. Sharp turns in town require the same amount of room as a semi.
As a matter of info, the trailer was built in a very small custom shop in Conneought Lake PA. It is very heavily built with dual 7000# axles and electric brakes on all wheels. The final cost was about $3,500 including a spare wheel and tire.

Jim

I still stand in amazement when I think about the timing of your project. From concept to completion in about 45 days! Boat, Truck, trailer, the works... The next time I need some serious work done, I'm calling on you.

Glad to see you here on the message board.

Jim,

What is total weight of the trailer (or boat&trailer)? Also, what are you using to tow such a beast?

Thanks,
Steve

Hi Steve
I have not yet had the chance to run the rig over a scale. Paul Schultz, who helped me with the trailer, weighed his out at just under 11,000#. (As a matter of reference, my CD25 loaded for travelling weighs 7k.) I should be about the same as Paul. I am towing the new boat with a 2001 Ford Super Duty, Super Cab, Long bed, 4x4 Turbo diesel. Fitted with a 14k# Reese Class V, Titan load equallizing hitch setup. This rig is rated at 14K# trailer wt. and 1,700# tonge wt. I had no problems going over the Allegheny mts on the way home but right angle turns in the town require a wide swing to avoid the curb.

Steve:

My trailer weighs in at 2250 lbs complete. Loaded with our CD27 and enough gear for a 3 week vacation she tips the scales at around 11,000 depending on if my wife brings along the kitchen sink or not.

We use a Dodge 3500/cummins. I think Jim is using a Ford F250/navistar diesel.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER SHARING THE NAME OF THE SMALL SHOP THAT MADE THE TRAILER FOR YOU? THE BEST TRAILER PRICES I HAVE OBTAINED THUS FAR HAVE BEEN FROM WILLIAMSON TRAILERS IN UTAH FOR $500 MORE THAN YOU HAD YOURS MADE FOR. THANKS RAY SEITZ:
