I'm thinking of selling the old girl.
So after almost 30 years of having her in the family, I have decided to sell Seque.
But I’m not really sure what to ask for her. When you have sailed and cared for the same boat for 30 years, my guess is I will ask for too much or too little.
Any ideas on how I should start the process?
Plenty of pics on my blog. Some of you know the boat. But where do I begin?
Thanks
Frank

Re: I'm thinking of selling the old girl.
Frank:
I would first decide on a reasonable asking price or firm price. Check various "sailboat for sale" websites like yachtworld.com and sailboatlistings.com. Yachtworld has two (2) CD 26s for sale for now (1986 - $12,500 and 1985 - $10,500). Not sure how they match up to your individual amenities, upgrades, etc. but it is a starting place. Sailboat Listings also has/had 2-3 CD 26s for sale. There are 3-4 other "sailboat for sale" websites.
You should also decide on whether you want to sell her yourself or hire a broker. It is doubtful any broker will ever be able to highlight S/V Seque's positive features as well as you. In my various search efforts I found almost all of the brokers to be less than useless. Frequently, I knew more about the characteristics, amenities, upgrades, etc. than the broker. He is for all practical purposes a "used car salesman" who is interested only in his commission. The advantage to having a broker, however, is that you avoid having to spend time with the "tire kickers" (those who are only looking with no real interest in owning). Of course, for this advantage you pay a commission (10%-15%).
Also, after looking at what other CD 26s have sold for you need to set a price - either an "asking price" (which is negotiable) or a "firm price" (non-negotiable) except for significant issues found by a buyer's survey before purchase. If you set a firm price make sure any prospective buyer knows that the price is non-negotiable except for survey issues found, if any.
Good luck
Hopefully, you may change your mind and keep S/V Seque in the family.

Re: I'm thinking of selling the old girl.
Roberto,
That's very helpful. $17,500 was the number in my head. But I might be overshooting the bar.
As far as brokers go...Robinhood Marine in ME was interested in listing her. Does that mean I have to transport her there?
Also Cape Yachts in town as well. Does anyone know if you can list with multiple dealers?
Heading down to her now, I want to winterize the engine before she gets hauled next week.
Thanks again,
Frank

Use the resources on this site...
After you determine your asking price, start by posting your boat "for sale" on our message board. Use the "Buy/Sell Used Boats and Gear" forum. Also, go to our home page at www.capedory.org (or just scroll to the top of this page and click on the CDSOA's logo -- top left) then select "Where to Look" from the menu on the left. From that menu select "Boats/Gear For Sale....". Some of the web sites listed on that page are free, some aren't. But you may want to list your boat on as many of the free ones as possible. Also, you may want to get your boat listed in Soundings, alot of boaters get that publication.
Good luck with the sale of your boat.

For every rule there is an exception.
As you know, Robinhood Marine is the ancestral home of Cape Dory Yachts. They would certainly have extensive knowledge about a Cape Dory 26 and could easily, and enthusiastically, acquire information specific to S/V Suque. From what I have learned over the past several years Dave Perry at Robinhood Marine knows more about Cape Dory sailboats than anyone else. Plus Robinhood has a gold star reputation.
I am "guessing" you probably cannot have multiple brokers. It would be like having 2-3 real estate agents signed on to market and sell your home. A "seller's broker" does not want to have to compete with another "seller's broker". Of course, if both brokers agree, then it is certainly doable.

We purchased our Cape Dory 25 from Dave Perry at Robinhood. I recommend him highly as knowledgeable of Cape Dorys and as a wonderful person.
