Accepting the fact that the Volvo 200 HP diesel engine smokes a little even when in perfect condition, has anyone tried an exhaust extention, etc., to keep the transom fom getting sooty? If so, did it help? Details?

CD 28 power - exhaust

Re: CD 28 power - exhaust
I installed a new 240HP Yanmar Engine that is known to burn fairly clean and I still have a darkened transom after a few weeks of operation. Last season I added 45 degree elbows and extensions to the exhaust to direct the exhaust down to the surface of the water while under way. This has produced some improvement but has not completely solved the problem. I guess it is something we all shall live with. I find that if I scrub the transom down after every few days of operation, it remains fairly clean. Although a major change, if the exhausts are redirected to exit through the sides of the boat near the stern - exiting at 45 degrees directing the exhaust to the rear (somewhat like modern boats)the problem would probably be solved. I am considering this change in the future.

I added a 12in extention on our 28 a year ago. Although not perfect, it reduced the soot by 75%.Jack wrote: Accepting the fact that the Volvo 200 HP diesel engine smokes a little even when in perfect condition, has anyone tried an exhaust extention, etc., to keep the transom fom getting sooty?
