Engine compartment vent hose - 25D

Post by John #126 »

While replacing the vent cowls on my CD25D, the old vinyl hose pretty much disintegrated. The vinyl is brittle and the steel wire is rusted. So a simple project has become a major PITA.
From prior posts, the preferred replacement is the polypropylene Trident Polyduct duct hose, available from several online suppliers.
If any 25D owners have replaced their vent hoses and know the lengths required, the information would be greatly appreciated. I'm resigned to wedging myself into the lazarette to replace the hoses and hope to only do it once. Option #2 will be to suck a string through the hose with a shop vac and measure it.
Thanks,
John

Vent hose seems to be sold in 50 foot rolls... seems to be about 5x what you'll need. Unless you can buy it by the foot, you don't need to know the exact length.

By the way... it's 4" hose, right?

I just replaced my cowl vents and hose this Spring. Parts are as follows:
-Shields 420, 3" Black HD Vinyl Blower Hose (28')
-Seadog 727130-3 Low Profile Vent - 3"

I had a bit of hose left over but not much. I ran the hose to the aft facing vent high due to heat rising. I ran the forward facing vent hose low for cool fresh air. I was able to bring the hose up through the cowl vent rings and ty-wrap the hose to the actual cowl vent then reinstall the cowl vent. The original installation just had the hoses laying loose under the cowl vents. I doubt there is much airflow but it is enough.

I just noticed that you have a CD28. I have a CD25D. I am not sure if the installation would be the same. I picked up the 25D from the original post.

GE to all from sunny Pensacola (at least today).

Is it just me or is this vent hose (OEM type) anything other than ordinary household dryer vent hose? That's certainly what it looks like aboard Rhapsody.

Engine vent hose does not have to deal with conditions nearly as tough as your average dryer vent hose. Have you ever heard of a vent hose catching fire? Long distance cruisers might want to weigh in, but I seldom motor for longer than your average dryer cycle. :?

I replaced mine this fall with Trident polyduct blower hose. It's a bit pricey, but what isn't? It's essentially crush proof. Instead of shifting it out of your way, if you are working under the cockpit sole, just lay on it, it just springs right back to shape in a few minutes. I still had the original dryer hose which was disintegrating. This new stuff will last longer than me. I also have a high profile cowl vent for the intake and a low profile for the exhaust. I'm sure the extra ventilation is helpfull.

Based on some earlier posts, I eliminated my vent hose altogether last spring. The 25D's so-called "engine room" is so cramped and so small that by turning one vent scupper forward and the other one aft, there seems to be enough air circulation to keep things well ventilated. And now I can actually see what's down there.

So that is what the those two hoses were for under the cockpit sole.

When I first ventured into the engine compartment, not knowing much about the engine, they were in the way and didn't seem to be attached to anything so I just removed them. I guess I should put them back and try to attach them to the venting cowls.

Glad I decided to read this post. Thanks all for the great advice.
