Teak Veneer

Post by John »

I need to repair (replace) the teak veneer sections of the cabinsole where it angles upward to meet the faces of the salon setees. The veneer is long (6') with the grain running in the long dimension (fore and aft direction in boat). The veneer needs to have a tight grain pattern to match the sole. Does anyone know of a source for high quality veneer in a wide roll width as described. Thanks!

John:
Teak veneer can be obtained from most hardwood and veneer dealers (check the Yellow Pages)in 48" X 96" sheets (also 48" X 48"). It's not cheap, but cheaper than buying teak plywood.
I would suggest removing the old pieces and using them as a pattern to cut replacements from 1/2" plywood. The reason is this: the originals were apparently constructed from a Philipine mahogany plywood that was not exterior grade, that is, the core laminations were not glued together with a waterproof glue, plus they were not sealed on the reverse sides. The result is that after years of being exposed to dampness, delamination can take place of the plywood itself and not just the veener. This is what happened to my CD-27. My solution was to buy some 1/2" fir AC exterior grade plywood, veneer one side and, using the old pieces for patterns, carefully cut new ones. The back sides should, I belive, be coated with an epoxy or varnished prior to installation for additional protection. The originals were installed with stainless steel screws and a mildly adhesive mastic. The bungs to cover the screw holes can be found at a place like West Marine for a few bucks or you can make your own with a plug cutter.
Hope this is of some help.

Ed, I'm in SW Florida and I do not have a local source for the veneer so if you have names etc. of some sources that would be great. It appears on my 30 that the plywood substrate is a fir plywood not a luan grade. After inspection it appears the setee would have to be removed to replace the entire plywood base as the setee face panel sits atop the sole. My plywood base is sound so I will scribe a pattern for the veneer. Thanks

John:
After a brief search on the internet, the only veneer suppliers I can find listed for your area are American Plywood Specialties in Clearwater (813/461-6193) and Quality Plywood Specialties Inc. in St. Petersburg (813/572-0500), the website for the latter:
http://home.worldnet.att.net/~mikejankowski/ .
Whether these are retailers or wholesalers only I don't know. At any rate, I'm sure they could probably point you in the right direction. Best of luck.
