Where have you positioned the name decal on your CD Typhoon?

Post by JulieC »

I'm debating where to put the decals for newly christened Dragonfly and would appreciate knowing what others have done:

In the center of the transom? Symmetry is nice, but name would be obscured by motor
To the starboard side of the transom? No motor obstruction, but then, no symmetry.
On the port/starboard side of the hull, towards the stern?

Thanks -
Jc

I gave this some thought and tried a few mock-ups on the computer before opting for symmetry. I think it looks best with or without the OB.

Starboard side of the transom about 3" below the taff rail....did a mock-up first. I love the asymmetry anyway. I thought I had a pic but it's nowhere to be found. This Winter I'm going to increase the lettering size to 4" instead of 3" but I love the way she looks.

I went off set because of the motor mount. http://bristol-blue.blogspot.com/2014/0 ... g-out.html

I put the name and hailing port centered on the transom. I find the motor doesn't really hide the name unless it's down and in use. Here's a pic:

I went went both sides of the hull to avoid the motor issue:

I decided not to give my boat a name. That resolved the issue nicely.

@tjr818, excellent. Somehow it's unthinkable, at least for me.

For me, too. A big part of the pleasure of having a vessel has to do with the many things that surround sailing. Naming a boat is one of them, as is the ceremony that surrounds it, even if it takes a couple of tries:

I had a lot of fun coming up with Dolcetto's name, and I'm already keeping a list of names for my next boat (but please don't tell my wife I'm already thinking about a next boat).

@pjust, nice video! Mine was a private ceremony, lol. Yeah I spent months coming up with her name and surprisingly came up with two favorites simultaneously, but the other name is saved for her soon-to-be adopted big sister. This stuff is what makes sailing such a passion.

Great input; I love seeing the pictures. "Dolcetto" looks lovely - would be interested to see how it looks with motor on the mount.

Also: any tips on where to buy (a Google search yields a million online options) and how to apply?

I got mine from BoatUS: https://www.boatus.com/boatgraphics/lettering.as
and made use of this helpful video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BG92O4tvrM

I found applying it a pretty straightforward process, though getting things straight on a curved surface is a tiny bit tricky. I think I got the hailing port a little askew, but I'm probably the only one who notices. I don't think I have a picture from the stern with the motor on and I'm seriously contemplating sailing without a motor next year.

I love Dragonfly as a name for a Ty! What was your alternative? I was tempted to go with Vaut le Voyage, but that seemed a little grand for a sprightly little craft. (Now that I think of it Sprightly would have made a good name, too!) A previous owner called my boat Argo, but the next owner thought that was too grand and re-named her L'Escargot.
