Chesapeake Bay - South River to Martins Point

Post by ch.ocallaghan »

S/V Circe and I just completed a short, but fullfilling 3 day cruise from the South River on the Chesapeake Bay to Martins Point on the Choptank River. Here are a few photos of the highlights.

View of South River - common Chesapeake Bay view.

Midpoint on the journey, being rapidly overtaken by ships unknown.

Note the swim noodles on the WB-8 dinghy being used to lessen instability.

S/V Immersheim - what a beauty. But probably can't be single-handed like S/V Circe.

Overtaking in turn - what a curious looking vessel.

El Galeon Andalucia:

She is a replica of the Galleons of the Spanish fleet of the 17th century, which ventured forth from southern Spain destined for ports in the New World and Asia. She is manned by a crew of 32 and her Captain is Antonio Gonzalo de la Cruz.

She is 167 feet long and has a beam of 11 feet. She has 3 masts and carries 6 sails. She is built primarily of oak, iroko (a form of African teak), and cedar.

She was built in 2010 in a shipyard in Punta Humbria, Huelva province, Andalucia Spain.

She left the port of Sevilla on her maiden voyage on 21 March 2010 en route to Shanghai via the Suez Canal. She arrived in China safely on 24 June 2010.

Her destination when I met up with her was the former colonial port of Oxford, Maryland, founded in 1683.

She is currently cruising the US East Coast.

She is the only galeón class vessel sailing the open seas today.

Fortunately, her intentions were friendly, otherwise a sadder tale I would have to tell.

Took time the next morning to jump in the water and scrub the waterline, and clean the prop and thru-hulls.

And finally, the little sand spit at tip of the point.

Some have called Martins Point the prettiest anchorage on the Chesapeake Bay.
