CD25 trailer info

Post by Don Kinley »

I want to take my CD25 to Charleston S.C. for an early summer 2001 cruising adventure, so I am going to refit a power boat trail

er to carry her. This is a dual axle trailer with surge brakes. Does anyone have plans or dimensions for such a trailer, or previous experience with this? I'm hoping that I can install "bunks" instead of stands and pads, and that I can retrieve her from the water with this . She is currently on a mooring in nearby Lake Hartwell, so I cant easily get any measurements from her hull. Thanks for any help.

Don,
There was an informative article on the subject in the Sept/Oct 2000 issue of "Good Old Boat" magazine. There web site is www.goodoldboat.com, but I don't know if you can access articles on the sight. Also, I was told that one advantage to consider with stands and pads is that you can paint the whole bottom of your boat by lowering one stand at a time. Hope this helps.

I trailer my CD25, but my trailer has poppets not bunks. As Brian mentioned, the ability to lower one poppet at a time to work on the hull is very helpful. If you would like me to e-mail photos or take any measurments let me know.
As a matter of information, gross weight of my boat and trailer is over 7,000#.

Don, Be careful to make sure the "powerboat" trailer will take the weight of the boat concentrated on the keel. 95% of the boat's weight will be there, in the middle of the frame. Powerboat trailers support most of the weight outboard, closer to the frame and the axle suspension points. Check the axle rating, they may only be rated at 3200# each. Also check that the tires are LT rated and not passenger car tires. Any weekness could be a real mess. I built a 20' utility trailer with adjustable pads and a 6" inverted channel welded down the middle to carry the weight of the keel. It still folded (bent) in the middle and put excessive pressure on the pads causing soft spots on the hull of my 5700# Pacific Seacraft 25. Be very careful. A CD25 isn't worth the risk.

Where are you? Bigwater marina? I sail a CD27 "ESCAPADE" on lake Hartwell out of Western Carolina Sailing Club. I built a trailer specifically for her. Depending on timing, you may be able to use my trailer for your trip to Charleston. I know it will carry the weight of a CD25. It's just a matter of blocking up the keel a bit and lowering the poppets to fit your 25 (3'6" draft vs 4'0" and a bit less beam).

If nothing else, maybe using my trailer to temporarily haul your CD25 will allow you to get the needed dimensions for your own trailer.

Let me know.
