TY boom vangs

Post by craigscott24 »

Anyone have experience with adding a boom vang to a Typhoon, or a topping life to replace the wire "boom hanger" ? What sort of equipment is the standard for these jobs?
Thanks.

When I had my Ty Weekender I installed a Garhauer boom vang 25 UAB 4-1 (I believe this is the correct model #).

Check the Garhauer website for other boom vangs model #s that may also fit the Ty.

I bought a vang from Sail Care in Pennsylvania. Works great and seems to be good quality. I think it was about $85. I made a topping lift by adding another pin to the masthead crane.

Craig, try looking at previous postings on "topping lift" for more ideas on how many of us have adapted our rigs to get more than the pig-tail affords. I do not use a vang, but do employ a bit of a cunningham to keep my boom hauled downard to flatten the sail. I'm purposely not over-outfitting my Ty for performance, which I really do not care to gain. I love the way she sails despite some of the inefficiencies! I downsized from a 47' Beneteau to this, and could not be happier.
