Best Typhoon battery

I just purchased a 1979 Typhoon Weekender. Wondering what best battery is for this boat. All I'll need it for is running lights and a GPS unit. Thanks. Glad to be aboard.

For several years I have been using a Wal Mart house brand riding lawnmower battery. In autumn, before I secure the Ty for the winter, I remove the battery and bring it inside. I then jelly up the terminals and hook it up to a trickle charger.

The battery is light enough that if need be, I can bring it home for an overnight recharge.

So far, so good. Knock on wood.

I'd think you'd want a deep-cycle marine type battery for this application. These will stand up to repeated discharges, where the battery reserve power gets drawn down much more than it would just starting an engine. Regular automotive type batteries will fail much sooner in these conditions.

I just bought a TyS last fall, so haven't actually used the electrical system yet, but it has a brand new Exide brand marine battery that the previous owner installed. The main thing is to try and keep the thing topped off as much as possible when not in use, and when you use it recharge it fully afterward.

Thanks, guys, for your advice. I guess it's my choice if I want to go with the $40 walmart model or the deep cycle unit for $100 more. This is all part of the learning curve. I'll have lots more questions as time goes by. CS

It's a very apropos inquiry. I removed old light hardware from my Ty upon receipt of it and am just now getting around to the possibility of installing lights for CG approval. But I don't want to over-do it either! In essence, the likelihood of using the system, in my environment is probably 1 in 100. Thus, sticking with period lights, yet want to explore the LED option with those and incorporate the smallest, most adaptable for placement, and the least expensive of batteries. If anyone prides themselves on one of these aspects and can illustrate with a photo, please be my guest. I'll be your audience!

I think the best battery for a Ty is no battery. A portable GPS and Navigation lights work great. Why go through the hassle of having to charge a large battery when a handful of AA's will get you through the season. I use led interior lights as well and they last through most if not all of the season on one set of AA's. If you need a spotlight check into some of the new tactical flashlights, I have one that fits in the palm of my hand and puts out 400 lumens.

I use one of these emergency jump starters from Stanely. It is great it has a 12 volt cig lighter, I can plug in my phone to the USB port on it. If I leave the lights or hatch open on my car it helps me get home also.

For my running lights I just purchased the flash light clamp on style.

I have use a small motorcycle battery to power my gps, VHF and depth sounder. I have a 1watt solar charger that sits on the cabin top when sitting on mooring. Stays charged through the summer and when I haul her out, the battery sits inside my garage and on a trickle charger. Had it for about 5 years and still ready for this summer.

Well agree with Markst on preference for no electrical---yet must do something. Prefer some sort of LED click on off type of thing. If anyone has a good solution, please send. thanks

Ola' fellow CD owners! Just bought a Typhoon last Fall and she's on the stands for a compete refit. Of course pics will follow sometime as soon as she is decent.

I'm installing a new Blue Sea panel, new wiring, 70 amp hr marine battery, cabin and complete nav lights as well as a small solar charger. Plans are to overnight often so she will need the new gear. I'll provide some more details a bit later when it comes together.

A minimal rig for GPS and occasional nav and cabin lights (LED) would be an 18 Amp-Hour gel cell battery for about $55. You can draw half out (9AH) and not over stress the battery. A 10 Watt solar panel will recharge it well from heavy use.

LED lights draw almost 1/8 the power of incandescent... Well worth it.

We Just fitted a small teak marine plywd box to the starbd side which is where the new Blue Sea panel will fit.

I'll glass over the old panel location to the right where the wiring is hanging.The old wiring will be used as pull wires where needed.

The rest of the wiring I'm going to do while she's dockside. I need to cut the list shorter to get her in the water by month's end!
