Recommendation on Cape Dory 25, need rudder

Post by Eric Cordis »

I've looked at a Cape Dory 25 (77), it has fiberglass
damage to the keel, and one side. Were can I find a
rudder, and the lower support. How does this ship sail?,
I used to own a 6,800 lb 26' AMF paceship fin kelled
sloop for comparison. Does the outboard pop out of the
water when going into the weather? Can a 6' 2' guy
sleep in one? Thanks for your help.

You can probably get a good glass man to fabrecate a rudder.
The other questions are moredifficult. the 1977 CD 25 is a pretty small boat. Afew years later, CD came out with a 25D which was substantially beamier and had more creature comforts. Neither one will comfortably accommadate a 6'2' person
Any outboard driven sailboat is going to have problems with the prop coming out of the water when heeled or in a heavy sea. Other than that the CD 25 is well built and fun to sail (but not necessarily competitive for racing). Good Luck

I own a Cape Dory 25 (1977). I am 6'5', 235lbs. I find
that I am definitely too big for the vee-berth but the
starboard quarterberth is just fine (I've always prefered
a quarter berth anyway.)

The boat sails very nicely with the solid feel common
to heavy full keel boats. It does heel quite a bit.

In general, I like the boat a great deal.
