I suppose the handler wasn't interested in your stash, either, or you might have been retained a bit longer.

Oh... which reminds me of the risk of clearing customs in certain far out of the way places. Place a bottle of something expensive on the inspector's desk and ask if it's okay to bring that into the country. He will either (i) say "Yes," (ii) put the bottle in his desk drawer, or (iii) have you arrested for attempting to bribe a government official. Local knowledge is critical for navigating these dangerous shoals.

Well, having digested all the sage comments, I have, so far, also digested 1 bottle of Meyers, 1 bottle Goslings Black Seal, and 1 bottle of Pussers. On deck is Mount Gay (Eclipse? Extra Old?, 1703 ?), Reunion Island, and Cane 10.
I was in Freeport yesterday and stopped by Bow Street Market, only to discover a veritable cornucopia of fine rum stock! There must have been at least a dozen different brands! Almost enough taste testing to get me through this ridiculous winter! WHEN WILL THERE BE AN END ????

So far my favorite is Pussers. Never would have thought it, but it has a fine oaky flavor, reminiscent of my favorite scotch. I found Meyers to be too molasses heavy for my taste. Black Seal is a good second place, so far.
Now this whole thing of aging rum in oak must have been a British thing from back in colonial times. Can't believe there are too many oak trees growing in Jamaica or Barbados? The question, then, is who invented rum? Were aboriginal islanders growing cane and distilling non-oaked rum, or did the Spanish, Brits, or French introduce it along with their oak barrels from Europe or the North American mainland? So, many questions to ponder while I pour yet another ration...

Fermentation invents itself but distillation of alcohol as we know it is a European technology.

I think it's universal that if you have a still you make hard liquor, using whatever local ingredients are near at hand. Grapes and other fruit, grains of all sorts, potatoes, sugar cane, etc.

Rich,

I think it was Mt Gay - straight

For us it has been Mt Gay straight or Meyers Dark for mixing.

But on other peoples boats and i other peoples houses I drink what is on offer - always.

We still miss you in Matty. Warmest to Melissa.

We have been back from a Crested Butte ski trip a little over a week now. While there I discovered Montanya Rums and their distillery and tasting room. Pretty Good stuff! I brought a bottle of the Oro Dark Rum home as a gift for a friend. We shared it last Friday night. Its good stuff!

I've never acquired the discerning palette the majority here seem to have cultivated. I've found the best tasting rum to be " gratis". :D

Like John Nebilak, I (and my rum-sipping buddies) like Zaya (Trinidad). Bacardi Anjeo (Mexico) is less expensive and sips quite well also.

So, I like all kinds of rum. But really like those from Barbados - I don't know why, but they seem to be the smoothest for drinking straight.

But...I tried something new two weeks ago.
Took pint of Myers dark, a pint of white rum, and a quart of amber rum and poured them into a glass container.

In that container I had 2 peeled mangoes, 1 quartered pineapple, zest from 3 limes, and a vanilla bean stick.

I let it sit for two weeks and had some on Sunday.

Wow - that was good!

I am not as picky as some when it comes to rum, but I can tell you, I just tried this, and it is NOT the best rum. it might be one of the worst rums I have ever tried, it tastes as bad as its name.

You paid good money for a bottle of rum that says:

"Fire In De Hole Erotic Rum" :?:

I held you in very high esteem - before your "rum post". :)

I didn't pay a dime for it! I was in a bar, Conchy Joes, I asked about the bottle, which I had previously seen. The bartender laughed, I asked if it is any good, because I don't understand how a drink can be "erotic". She asked if I wanted to taste it, so poured me a sip (I took the photo then). It was terrible! I asked if she liked the rum, she said she never tried it, but they have a house drink called a "black hole", equal parts Fire In Da Hole, Malibu and Bacardi 151....she said she never has tried that either. You know its bad when the bartender wont drink the stuff...

I humbly submit that the best rum of all times is the rum in your glass while the question is being considered! :D :D

Neil Gordon wrote:I had this stuff in Trinidad a bunch of decades ago... came in a pint bottle and I'm thinking it didn't actually have a brand. Wasn't bought in a store, either, just from some guy in the street.

As for declaring any particular run, "The Official Rum of the Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association," that will only happen by putting it to a vote of the board and perhaps a vote of the membership overall, in either case, or perhaps both cases, only if the applicants provide adequate samples for a fair (i.e., "extended") study.
Reminds of an incident that's not associated with CDs or sailing but was at a port. Anyway, many years ago, I was drving an old beat up VW from Germany to Morroco and was waiting for the ferry at Algeciras. Well, we had arrived in the middle of the night to wait for the first ferry out in the morning. Figuring it would help pass the few hours stuck in a cramped VW, I found a local watering hole that would sell me some libation. For a few pesetas I bought a bottle of something, no label, gussing it was supposed to be wine (maybe) or brandy (who knows). However, once we tried a taste it was so bad that I just opened the door and set the bottle down next to the car. A little while later a rather inebriated guy sort of stumbled by, saw the bottle and picked it up, opened it, took a swig, got a horrified look on his face, and even he couldn't stomach the stuff. He set it right back down and stumbled off. I've always wondered if he survived!
