Offshore liferaft rental

Post by Michael Carroll »

Need a recommendation from whom to rent a 2-4 man offshore liferaft. Preferably in Northeast. Also will consider renting from a boat owner. Maybe yours need a repack? Needed Dec-May for Bahamas cruise.

Michael,

By my calculations, you will need to rent the raft for 6 months. That being the case, you are likely to pay at least 1/2 the new cost for a rental from anyone who is in the business. Maybe someone would like to split the cost with you and take it off your hands at the end of six months after an inspection.

Another benchmark you might consider, BoatUS rents 406 Mhz EPIRBs for $45 a week:

http://www.boatus.com/foundation/epirb.html

Their cost for these is probably 1/2 the retail price of $1000. That's 4.5% per week at retail and they are doing this through a funded 501(c)(3) foundation!

Maybe someone would like to share the expense of an EPIRB as well.

Just some thoughts that may help you get offshore with peace of mind.

Have a great trip,

Ken
