Keeping cockpit locker junk out of Volvo fanbelt

Post by CD30C »

I recently took ownership of a CD 30 cutter, hull 53. When I peaked into the cockpit locker, I could see dock lines, shore power cords, and fenders leaning against the flywheel of the engine. Clearly, this is bad. I can see that there was once some kind of dividers, or panels, but all of that is gone now, and it is impossible to see how it was configured. I am sure I can come up with some solution, but I don't want to "reinvent the wheel" How is this done in your boat? Is there a standard solution?

Doug,

All of the ones that I have seen had simple plywood dividers. They glassed a piece of wood into the hull with a groove in it running directly under the edge of the cockpit. You would put the panel into it vertically and then the upper part of the panel laid against the vertical wall of the foot well with a wooden toggle there to hold it in place. Even with these, you do have to be careful. On the starboard side, my battery tray blocks anything from going into the engine and on the port side, I wedge a bucket between the fuel tank and the board to keep everything out. When I bought the boat, one of the pieces of line hanging on the port side had significant fraying suggesting that it had been rubbed by the fan belt.

Someone probably has pictures but I unfortunately do not.

I removed the plywood panels and replaced them with clear lexan with a whole bunch of drilled holes for ventilation.
