can any typhoon owners tell me.......?

Post by sloopjohnl »

i have seen dozens of typhoons from the '60's to the last years of production in the '80's, but i have never seen a ty with cam cleats mounted on the cabin top just aft of the jib sheet tracks. i bought my ty from an original owner on tom's river, nj near barnegat bay. he apparently ordered all the options he could get on it in 1976 including spinnaker gear except for the sail and a pole. the cam cleats were made of a fiber composition and are the same as the mainsheet cam cleat on the back deck.

does or did anyone else have these same cleats or is this an oddity or special order and not an option?

last year one of the cams broke due to a loose screw and a lot of strain one particular outing. i replaced both with new harken cam cleats and would never be without them. they are so much simpler than taking wraps and undoing wraps on the coaming cleats and definitely keep the jib sheets out of the way. they are easy to adjust or release from anywhere in the cockpit and are definitely simpler when two or more occupy the cockpit. also makes the jib sheets shorter when it is time to purchase new ones.

My '74 (hull 696) had a fiber cam cleat on the cabin top at the rear right side only. The boat also had a regular aluminum cleat on the cabin top, one per side. The jib leads were led through bulleyes; replacing them with Schaeffer blocks on cars for the 1" track has made the jib a lot easier to adjust.

I seem to have the same spinaker bail and block on the mast that every other Ty I have seen has. I can't tell about the rear deck unit; a previous owner gad installed a traveler (Nico-Fico; Italian for "can't get parts") to replace the regular mainsheet block system.

Which Harken cam cleats did you get, and what size line do you use for the sheets?

My Ty has been a Barnaget Bay boat from the begining. It was named "Puffin" by the first owner, who had the boat from '74 till '92.Unless there was more then one dealer in the northern Barnaget Bay area, I think most were equipped and sold the same way by the same people.

P.S. Would anyone have any idea about the Barnaget Bay dealer situation during the 70's?

I saw a Ty at the Cleveland Yacht Club that had cams in the spot you described. They were modern harkens though. Although mine doesn't have them, I'd agree that they would be alot easier to tack. It would probably look better on the Ty to get shiny bronze ones though.

I HAVE A TYPHOON DAYSAILER, HULL #6, , I AM SECOND OWNER. IT CAME WITH CAM CLEATS. INSTALLED VERTICALLY ON INSIDE OF COCKPIT, BELOW
WINCH. SPEAKING OF NICO -FICO. I WAS OFFERED ONE. DO I WANT TO MESS WITH IT, OR ANY OTHER TRAVELER SYSTEM.

bill,

dealer was Barnegat Bay Sailing Center, Inc.
Rte. 9
Beachwood, NJ

the original literature the original owner gave me does not show the cam cleats at the aft end of the jib tracks; nor does the '85 sales brochures.
