Post Sandy Repairs and Upgrades

Post by swhfire21 »

Our TY, just bought in August, got wiped off her stands in the storm surge and ended up with her bow on a bulkhead and stern on top of a floating dock (no idea how that happened). Damage included a lot of gouging/loss of gel coat starboard stern quarter, gouging under bow, chunk out of rudder (just above gudgeon) and more gelcoat cracks in cockpit corners. Insurance company totaled her, leaving plenty of extra $ for other wanted updates and repairs I probably would have never goten to until it was too late.

Found a guy in Waretown, NJ who loves classic boats and woodwork. Pat Francis at PF Customs. If you're in NJ and need repairs/upgrades I'd highly recommend him. Hard to find anyone in South Jersey interested in old boats, let alone saiboats. Any way here's what we ended up getting done:

Stern quarter repaired with gel coat computer matched.
All cockpit gel cracks (and one on foredeck) ground out, filled and finsihed.
Scraped/sanded about 20 years of bottom paint off revealing some very minor blistering, a couple of gouges and a rudder gudgeon that was coming off keel (at least party to blame on a bad previous repair). Everything was filled and faired with a barrier coat being added and with new copolymer ablative bottom paint.
Rudder damage repaired and some old delaminating bondo removed, filled and faired.
Painted on a red boot stripe. Decided to take bottom paint up right to bottom of boot stripe as boat is kept on a cedar water creek (brown often foamy water). The white area beneath the old boot stripe (sticker) was always scummy looking.
Found a piece of the rub rail on port bow was sprung and had been previously repaired with caulking to a width of about 3/8 of an inch. Installed about 6 ft of new teak (brass strip not reinstalled yet in photo).

If lucky, here are some pics:
