Re: Best outboard for Typhoon
I have a long shaft, Mercury 4.5 hp. Motor has forward, neutral and reverse. I have a 1971 Typhoon Weekender that has the original bronze mounting bracket. With this type of bracket, you need a long shaft motor. I've found that having a motor with neutral and reverse is very good as opposed to a motor with just forward. I do not believe that you'll need any more horsepower than a 4.5. I only use motor generally twice per season--at beginning and end. Motor is not used during season as I keep boat on mooring.Mark wrote: Would appreciate any comments, suggestions, recommendations, etc. concerning best outboard for Typhoon.

On my old Ty, with the Spartan outboard bracket, we had a 6 HP Johnson long shaft. It was great. F-N-R was a big help. I needed a decent size to move us around when it got calm.

How about a Yamaha 4 stroke, 4 hp long shaft with a 2 hour gas tank under the cowling? I have it on original bronze Typhoon mount. No need for gas hoses or mixing oil. Best of all, being a 4 stroke, it STARTS!!!

Re: Best outboard for Typhoon
I think it should be 4 to 5 hp and the lightest you can find. It might help if folks could look up the weight of theirs when they post for Typhoons. Mine is a 5hp Tohatsu 2 stroke long shaft that weighs in at 42 pounds w/o fuel. I would think that this is almost too heavy as the outboard bracket hangs the motor pretty far out.

dittoes! motor is now 25 years old. don't know if i'll ever wear it out! if i had to replace it though i think i would opt for 4hp and a bit less weight.

Re: Best outboard for Typhoon
Mark, After much reseach this year for a new outboard for my Ty, I purchased a 4 hp Jhonson, two cycle,in line, 2 cylinder engine -4500 -5500rpmMark wrote: Would appreciate any comments, suggestions, recommendations, etc. concerning best outboard for Typhoon.
Also has fuel tank capacity for those long hauls,or use the integral tank(1.9 quarts) for in and out the harbour,or dread the thought ...windless days.Transom height for the long shaft 19.5'' to 20'' that hangs of the original bronze bracket just fine, and weighing in at a mean 35lbs is I think about as light as you can get..
Hope this helps ,regards.............. Bob
