looks like a how to article to me! For real I'd be interested in how you did that. I have two old mains laying around. Hope to order a new main come spring.
www.seabags.com up in Portland Maine recycles your old sails into seabags and other nautical items.
They picked it up when they were down this way.
I got to choose something in there catalog.
Ended up with a really nice tote bag for free.Nice way to remember my blown out Main.

This is what I will be doing with my old main and Genoa, as I have done with several other sails in the sail inventory when I acquired S/V Bali Ha'i.
Sails for Sustenance is a very good organization and they "do good" for the people of Haiti who have so little and have been so devastated by every imaginable disaster (natural and man-made) that could befall them.
The fisherman of Haiti are some of the most industrious, innovative people I have met. It is amazing what they can do with so little.
Just a thought.
I wish everyone on this board and their family and friends a Safe and Happy New Year
Felice Anno Nuovo

For those who asked (and those who didn't), the sail is 46" along the foot, and 60" and 64" along the luff and leech, which makes it pretty much reversible.
This is a developing thread with some varied ideas on how to use old sails. What a great bunch of ideas. I've got an old jib that I might get down to Haiti, now that I know there is a venue for that. Thanks! ( And to think I made office curtains out of part of an old mainsail...more in my blog http://baggywrinkles.blogspot.com oh man oh man....! What was I thinking!!?

Not to mention using an old spar as the rod; roller reefing office curtains is a brilliant idea. (If this catches on, the fishermen in Haiti are screwed.)

Well not sure which way is the preferred way to hang a sail in a window, but this is what I came up with for my office:
And for the close up detail of the step inserted and the rope tie. I chose to keep the spar the length of the inside molding and so an overhand knot on the hooks works quite well to keep things suspended without suspense!
I don't worry with trying to roll this way or that, I'm all about impression...just like the movie All is Lost LOL.
