new stove plus storage

My wife and I are new Cape Dory 31 (S/V Suppose) owners and, soon to be cruisers. As an introduction to the forum, we would like to share the results of a recent project...

We recently installed a new alcohol stove in S/V Suppose that is 2 3/4 in. narrower than the original CNG stove. That gave us the opportunity to add the badly need storage for silverware and galley knives shown below.

This is the new spacer box with a lower drawer that I made from teak and plywood. The box at the top supports the stove and has a tray built into it that is handy for setting aside a spoon or spice bottle.



The drawer is mounted on slides against the side wall. Although it is less than 3 inches wide, it is perfect for storing silverware and galley knives.

Great and beautiful solution to the smaller stove installation. I probably would have centered it and lost the stowage space. This makes me want to look around for a vertical stowage space for our knives and silverware.

You aren't quite done yet, though. That drawer definitely needs a latch of some sort, Steve.

Not for every purpose, but I tend to default to latches and holders I can make for free from material found in the bottom of a locker.

We are about to fork out for a new stove and are considering the Origo 6000. Your stove looks good what make is it and how is it performing?

This is the Origo 6000 but may be several years old. We bought it new on eBay from a dealers old stock. We chose alcohol for safety, reliability and simplicity of operation. It has been perfect in those aspects. Heat output in oven and from burners is more than adequate. Only problem has been hotspots on pans. We are looking for heat diffusers for the burners to help with that. Alcohol is often criticized for low heating capacity. The burner tanks hold a little less than a liter and last approximately 3 wks for us. We live aboard and cook breakfast and dinners.

Any suggestions on heat diffusers?

From what we have heard from you it seems that the Origo 6000 is the way we will go for a new stove. It looks good and solid and seems to perform well with only minor glitches.

'Not sure about heat diffusers for the rings, for the oven we currently use a piece of old oven metal with perforations (in our Hillerange alcohol oven) a friend of ours uses a piece of floor tile.

Great Idea, Ray!

Jenn and I bought our 31 last summer and are planning to install an Origo 6000 this spring. The off-center install makes sense. Really clever.

Another project we have on the list is adding as much new insulation as possible to the ice box. Not yet sure if we'll have to drill through the aft side of the stove compartment. Still thinking about that one.
