Lewmar winches

Post by David Morton »

Anyone know the spec differences between Lewmar Ocean Series and the Evo Series? Checked their website and it's not very helpful. The EVO 15st is about $100 cheaper than the Ocean 16st. I'm inclined to avoid the chromed finish for aesthetic reasons, but the all bronze models are no longer made. Can't seem to find more info on the various alloy finishes for the EVO.

They still make the bronze models, I just spoke to Lewmar at Annapolis Boat Show about them a couple months ago and they did indeed have display models in bronze. But, they are special order only (which is how it was 10 years ago last time I bought a bronze winch form them, 6 to 8 week turn around time and a nasty price tag though). Keep in mind that the chrome version IS bronze, the special order just gets you the same winch that isnt cromed (and pay more for the lack of chrome... silly). The EVO may not be able to be had in bronze though, I never asked about that, any winch that does not list a chrome option and only offers alloy options probably is not able to be custom ordered in bronze. To order one of these, West Marine type store may not be able to do it, being dependant on exact part #s for their computer systems, but a rigger or small chandlery who deals personally with Lewmar should be able to (I order my last custom lewmar bronze winch via Fawcetts in Annapolis).

As for the difference in the EVO and the Ocean, my impression was that the EVO is slightly simpler in design. All my winches are Ocean though so I didnt pay much attention to the EVO.

David:

Check the Defender website:

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... 49&id=3072

http://www.defender.com/product.jsp?pat ... id=1396479

They state the specs for Ocean Series and EVO series. Most of the specs looks to be the same except the height which is about 30 mm shorter on the EVO series.

I wish everyone on the board and their family and friends a Safe and Happy New Year.

I believe Harken still makes bronze wenches. I purchase two # 6 bronze B6BBA one speed wenches last year and only need one to replace the old chrome reefing wench on the boom. If anyone needs a #6 send me a PM.

Checked the Harken website. $1600 each!!! I think I'll pass! Spoke with Lewmar and they say the difference between the EVO and the Ocean ST is mostly aesthetic and, indeed, the Ocean ST16 can be had in bronze finish for an additional $200 each. Hmmm. Maybe I'm making too much of the aesthetic appeal of traditional bronze winches. Any one have pictures of chromed winches they have installed to replace the originals? Are we happy with them? Any thoughts about the alloy finishes on the EVO models in terms of look and durability?

Yeah, John, I thought so, too. 500 b.c. ... Some things never change.
