When your brother-in-law asks how he can help, "Just sit there and don't touch anything," might be the best answer.

Never, ever, EVER run a lantern up a halyard (poor man's anchor light) without first attaching a downhaul.

If there's risk of collision between you and a powerboat, anticipate a near death experience.

Surprised no one else mentioned this one:

It is better to shake out a reef when you're bored than to tuck in a reef when you're scared.

How about these:

Mackerel sky and mare's tails make tall ships carry lower sails

and

Comes the wind before the rain, soon the sun will shine again??

I was a kid when I first heard this one:

Red sky at morning, sailors take warning.

Red sky at night, sailors delight.

Think spring,

I've long wondered what "soon" means here. Is it minutes or days?

I'm sure it relates to sailing in many ways, but my ol' Pappy wasn't a sailor when he told me,

"If you don't think too good, don't think too much..."
"If a Man speaks at Sea, where no Woman can hear,
Is he still wrong?

Hi all,
My two favorites...

"Don't sail where the birds are walking."

"Always hit the softest, least expensive thing you can find."

A corallery to the first is
"Do not sail on the brown part of the chart. it's the sh**."

The likelihood of the second happening is the same as the buttered side of the bread landing butter side up.

Off to the south tomorrow. Next stop Lankawi, Malaysia.

Take care,
Fred

Give a sailor a rope and he'll give you back a line.
