Typhoon Rudder Shaft Head Removal: How?
It's clear a lot of rainwater getting into my newly-acquired Ty is coming through the poorly bedded teak cover piece around the rudder tube. I'm sure this topic has been covered before (I apologize), but I'd appreciate any tips on removing the bronze tiller head piece from the stainless rudder shaft. All screws have been removed, and of course she won't budge. I've got penetrating oil working overnight. Let me know what works without distorting or destroying head or shaft tube (boat's in the water). Thanks.

this fitting is like a battery cable clamp. remove the bolt that tightens the ears on the opposite side from the tiller. slide a wedge of wood or plastic in there and gently tap with a hammer to just slightly spread the ears. be sure to also remove the front screw under the tiller. this acts as a set-screw to lock the tiller head to the rudder shaft. after you do this and spray in a little penetrating oil lightly tap up on the tiller head with a brass hammer or dead-blow hammer and it should pop loose. you can also try tapping it lightly side to side while someone holds the rudder in place to help loosen - but be gentle!
