Cape Dory 300 MS

Post by Jim Roedel »

I have been looking at a Cape Dory 300 Motorsailer and would appreciate any comments both pro or con regarding this boat. I come from a sailing background but would appreciate the pilothouse feature. Several sailors who have first hand knowledge of these boats say that they sail fairly well and that they are really more of a pilothouse sailboat rather than a motorsailer. Also, are there any problems with the mechanics or design? Would it be limited to coastal sailing or some offshore?

Jim;
Do a search for 300MS. Hobby Marine has the molds. I had a very interesting discussion with them. The original design was from Clive Dent one of the designers who made trawlers popular with the recreational boating crowd. I encourage you to contact the folks at Hobby as they are very well 'dialed-in' to the boats design both the pros and cons. In fact they have retained Clive Dent as a consultant for their reincarnation of the boat.

I think that the 300 MS is an ideal boat. It sails well and will motor at 7-8 kts. There were some changes made over the production run. We have purchased the molds for the 300 MS and will start production in January. I will be glad to answer any questions that you might have. As far as Off-shore trips are concerned, I would take the boat to the islands or to Bermuda with full confidance.

I beleave that the boat is a wonderfull two person sailing boat. Thee were several options available for the boat when new. You can call me at 252-224-1600. Good luck in your surch. Used prices range from $60,000.00 to $80,000.00.
