CD 10 Flotation

Post by Susan Champagne »

Our Cape Dory 10 has lost most of its flotation and I am looking for information about replacing it. What type/form of styrofoam should we use and what is a good source? I would appreciate any information on this subject. Thank you! Please e-mail me.

I am also replacing the foam in my CD10. The cheapest source I have found is Clark Craft Company, phone number is 716-873-2640

The fellow that sold me my CD 10 replaced it with a newer model that had an interior liner and seald floatation areas under the seats....as well as teak instead of mahogony. He did this because of a scary experience swamping the boat. I swamped the boat to see and indead.....the boat floated just under the water surface. My suggestion would be to squeeze as much floatation into the boat as possible. They sell floatation bags at canoe stores......which might be a little pricey. Nothing is more boyant than pure air. 5 gallon clear plastic collapsable water jugs are another idea. The CD 10 is generally not recoverable from a capsize but in cold water in a prolonged situation more boyancy would be desirable . I have a review of the CD 10 from Small boat Journal and they flipped it sailing down wind! Still kinda miss mine.........

I am replacing intact but soggy flotation in a CD 10. I would like to find foam that will absorb a minimum of water. Some preliminary research on the net indicates that EPS flotation (expanded polystyrene foam) is the best stuff for the job. I am also looking for input as I've never worked with the stuff and would be interested in suggestions.
