cd 28 main halyard to cockpit

Post by jimcolavito »

Bought a '78 CD28. The boom vang sheet is routed through block and cam cleat to cockpit. This looks like it was made for the main halyard not the boom vang. Am I right? This seems like a stupid question because I've already changed it to the main and it works fine - but was that CD's intention?

Jim:
The 28 was factory fitted with a self-tending (club-footed) jib with a control line (jib sheet) run through a block and aft to the cockpit. Hard to know exactly what you are seeing without seeing it myself, but I'd guess that's what has been used (at least partiallY).

My '77 CD 28 also has its vang routed with a turning block and cam cleat to the cockpit, on the port side. The club jib is led to a winch on the starboard side.

I don't know if the vang was a factory installation or a previous owners upgrade. I like the setup as I usually sail shorthanded and it is easy to adjust from the cockpit.

Have same rig on Rope Yarn a CD 28 hull 245.
Leads on port side run through a "Harkin" line organizer and the Jams are the type where the lever on top is pushed down to hold the line. Can't Really set the main up tight from the cockpit but its great for reefing. You may find you want a down haul on the main under some conditions.

Don't know original intention but have seen the same on other 28's used for topping lift and vang. I have a rigid vang so my topping lift is really just a spare halyard.
