HELP: Looking to buy Cape Dory 27 pulpits and sails

Post by MarianneM »

Hey there,

My Cape Dory 27 was badly damaged during Sandy when she floated off her poppets and was grinding into other boats for hours. As a result, her stern and bow pulpits are completely ruined and all stanchions are gone. I am writing here on the off chance that someone has some used pulpits in the right size they want to sell to me, or has thoughts on where and how to get some made. My boat is on City Island in the Bronx (New York City).

Meanwhile, I also need "new" sails: my main ripped, and when I bought the boat it only had a genoa which is way too overpowering for my 10-year-old daughter (I need her to be able to handle the boat, also with the head-sail up). Anyone wants to get rid of a used-but-useful main or jib? Thoughts on where to buy one?

Thank you!
Marianne

I've been trying to find an original pulpit for a few months now and have not had any luck. I've come to the conclusion that we're just gonna have to get one that has similar dimensions and use it, several yards sell them for cheap.

As for the sail, we recently got a used CD27 main on CL for $100. I search every couple of days for "Cape Dory" on eBay and CL around the US, trying to find stuff we need. If you are patient, you can find some good deals. If the need is more pressing, I'd call sailmakers and see if they have any with similar dimensions that people have traded in.

Hey, that's helpful, thank you! Though, um, what's CL? Sorry, I am new to the boat-owner community: the CD27 is my first....

Craigslist.

Be wary though, there are a lot of scams. I personally use searchtempest.com to search different areas since the main CL site doesn't allow you to search other regions. Be wary buying from anyone that's remote, if you do then insist on using PayPal and don't use money order or anything like that. I generally don't do remote orders on CL for anything over $100.

There are a few websites that sell used sails too, like http://www.usedsails.com/. I haven't bought from them, but they usually have a good inventory.

I was at South Sails a few days ago picking up our cleaned and patched main, the owner (Mac) indicated that he had a sail with the similar dimensions that was previously traded in. While I didn't examine it in depth, it looked clean and he said it was well made. You can call or email him with your dimensions, mention that you have a Cape Dory 27 and that he recently indicated he had a main with similar dimensions. I've had a few dealings with him in the past and he's been really helpful and honest. If you talk to him and it sounds like it'll work, I'd be happy to go examine it or take photos for you. Their website is http://southsailsflorida.com/.

If you are still looking I have a North Sails set I may sell. Excellent/very good condition. Fit my CD27 #216. Heavy duty. I have not yet measured them but I think the Genny is 150%.
