New sails; CD insigna and number

Post by Sea Hunt Video »

I am getting ready to order new sails (main and Genoa) for my 1982 Cape Dory 25D.

I have decided I am going to raise the boom about 1 foot at the mast so that I can install a folding Bimini top and have standing head room (at least for me that is all of 5'9"). The sail lofts I have talked with seem to agree that this will not significantly affect the sailing characteristics of a CD 25D. Someone suggested it was sort of like having a permanent "half reef" in the main. Given my limited (poor) sailing skills that is probably a good thing.

Some have suggested that I just raise the aft end of the boom with the topping lift. I tried this. It does work OK and does give me a little more headroom in the middle of the cockpit. However, when I stand back from S/V Bali Ha'i with her boom raised at the stern it just does not look "seamanlike" (legit word :?: ) I was always told that the boom should be parallel to the deck. It is probably an application of the old phrase "six in one; half a dozen in the other".

I would like to have the sail loft install a proper "CD 25D" logo on the main (both sides I think). Most of the lofts basically say "bring us what you want and we will install it". Does anyone know what is the appropriate "CD 25D" logo for the mainsail :?: Where can I acquire one:?:

I would also like to have the loft install S/V Bali Ha'i's "number" on the mainsail (both sides again I think) and near (just below :?: ) the "CD 25D" logo. Last year I had S/V Bali Ha'i documented with the USCG.

Should I install the CD hull number (0069) or the USCG documentation number (1237123) :?: :?: :?: I seem to recall that Russell or someone recommended the USCG doc number but I cannot now find this post to confirm this. Not surprising. I have to be the dumbest person with access to a computer.

Any pictures anyone has of their mainsail with the CD insignia and number (hull or USCG doc number) would be much appreciated, especially of a CD 25D.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts, suggestions and recommendations.
Fair winds,

Roberto

There is a product brochure posted in the Cape Dory Info section which shows the CD25D insignia. Also, it is standard practice to put the vessels hull number (example 0027, or just 27) on the main, but there are plenty of exceptions so do whatever suits you.

Normally you will omit any lead zeros. And, it is a little less expensive. The sail loft will charge to install each number, port/starboard. JM

Robert,
Some pretty good sail pictures with the 25D logo here.
I bought a new main for my 26 from Rolly Tasker without any insignia. I found a few templates on line (e.g., here and here at the chandlery link) , blew it up to actual size with my computer printer, modified it a bit by looking at Cape Dory mainsail pictures on the internet, and cut out the insignia using this material fromSail Rite, and stuck it onto my sail.

Bob:

You give me far too much credit for being able to do things I am not qualified to do. "Templates" and "computer printers", etc. are well beyond my skill sets.

I am probably going to look through old Cape Dory catalogs, find an CD 25D insignia that looks good, and show it to the sail maker.

Some of the ones I have seen are in multiple colors (blue and red and black). Your CD 26 insignia is all black. Personal preference or are sail insignias supposed to be all one color :?:

Robert,
I did mine in all black because that's what I saw in pictures. I imagine you could use different colors. I stuck to one color because it was 17.50/yd of 54" wide material.
