Starborrd Tack Starting problems

Post by John Johnson »

My engine normally starts with no problems, a good shot of glow plug.....3/4 throttle and off she starts......HOWEVER...on a number of occasions this summer after sailing hard on a starboard tack....she won't start... my usal remededy is to wait a bit and try again.... often it seems if we go to a port tack... or if things have settled down a bit, and we are not heeled so much, then it will start. It does always eventually start but it makes me uneasy as if there were an emergency, I cannot count ont it!!!!!! Any ideas???????

Ease the sails and head up. You will then have less heel.
In an emergency it's usually a good idea to slow down
and that's exactly what this will do.
Sorry I don't have any idea about the problem with the
engine.

Have you tried bleeding the fuel lines? You could have an air bubble in a high spot that isn't high in stbd tack.

On my engine YSM-8, heeling will put oil into the combustion chamber.
This will cause hard starts and also rapid acceleration when the engine is running. The manual, I believe, documents this.
