Cape Dory 25 replacement motor
I need to replace my outboard motor. Would appreciate suggestions for 6hp 4 cycle motors. Old motor was Yamaha 2 cycle which fit in well.........with no modifications. I would want replacement to fit in exisiting well. Suggestions on manufacturer, reliability, power, and supplier would be appreciated. Thanks Bill
Re: Cape Dory 25 replacement motor
It may be helpful to try the search feature here. If memory serves me correctly, the topic has been pretty well covered. It seems like to 6 hp tohatsu long shaft or extra long shaft was the consensus. I think it was called the saildrive or sailpro or something similar.

The Tohatsu 6hp SailPro is the way to go. I installed one in
old CD 25 and it worked great. Six horsepower is plenty adequate for the CD 25 and the SailPro comes with a flat prop that really moves the boat well.

Just put a sail pro in ours... Spectacular. Half throttle or less for hull speed towing an inflatable. Also it is easy to turn in the well. The only downside is the flat prop really fills the motor well while underway. Hopefully filling the water tank under the very will fix that.

Ditto on the 6hp Tohatsu/Nissan. The 20" shaft is plenty long, and the Sailpro comes with the charging circuit and the 6" pitch prop. When I bought my Nissan version several years ago, those were extras that I opted for. The newer models have the shift lever forward instead of on the side, which looks to be a lot more convenient.
I bought mine from Online Outboards. Great experience with them. Free shipping and no sales tax unless you live in Tennessee.
They have it on sale right now for $1500, but the sale ends tomorrow.

This is my ad I posted today on the sailboatowners website if you wish to take a look. Might be worth it since you are in Maryland.

Like new 2010 Tohatsu 6 HP long shaft. Carb rebuilt last winter. Being sold for me by Tim at Gateway Marina in Trappe MD and phone is 410-476-3304. Engine has less than 20 hours. It fits nicely on the boat and moves my 1980 Cape Dory around nicely.
I live in New Jersey and only sail once in a while down in Trappe, MD. It is not enough use to keep the engine running nicely and I had the fuel gunk the engine up twice. I believe this is a great engine if it can be used on a more regular and frequent basis. Two weeks ago I purchased a 5 HP LEHR propane outboard for my Cape Dory 25 from Scandia Marine Services in Stevensville, MD. The Tohatsu is being stored indoors feel free to call Tim and make a reasonable offer as it is just sitting in storage with him.
Thanks
