CD30 Stuffing box.

Post by nosara »

This is a question regarding CD30 with MD7 and V drive. Has anyone installed a PSS drip less unit on this configuration. My shipyard says there is not enough room for a PSS installation. The engine is out of the boat at the moment. Will go back in very soon.
Question, if you installed a PSS in your CD30 with V drive what unit did you use?

I've searched the forum and found some data on the subject.but want more.

I used a Lasdrop drip-less shaft seal instead of the PSS and it fits just fine.
It's the model with the orange bellows.

I used the PSS when I re powered and dont see why it wouldnt work with your set up. The critical thing is having enough shaftlog to clamp to.

MD7 with V drive means plenty of prop shaft to grab. You will probably have to use a tube between the aft end of the seal and the stern tube. Just make sure the end of that tube that attaches to the stern tube is on really tight, as it will be rather inaccessible once the engine is re-installed and the boat is back in the water.

Here are hopefully the photos of the shaft and the rebuilt engine. We rapacked the stuffing box today. I may defer the pss until The fall. The yard doing the work said the PSS needs to be Where the shaft enters the boat. I'm still working on the engine bed area. please don't look at the mess. This photo was taken before cleaning started. There were leaves covering the stainless clamps on the far end so you can't see them. Was the tube standard that length? or did the stuffing box originally reside at the entrance to the boat. If so that would be right under the engine. It now sits close to the transmission and access is fair.

That's consistent with my arrangement. The hose is 15" long, so you don't have to crawl completely under the engine to adjust the stuffing box. I'm surprised at the twist in the hose, that does seem excessive.

Would a PSS be more likely to get out of alignment and leak on a long hose? I suspect so. I'll stick with a conventional box for my setup right now.

What's the deal with the extra set of hose clamps and two different sizes of hose??? Did someone use the larger hose as an extension? I'd be concerned about clamping two flexible hoses against each other, that's a flashing red light and siren to me... Did they sleeve inside the 1.5" hose to support the clamps?

Deep Blue Yacht Supply will sell you 2' of 1.5" hose for $50. I had trouble with the usual suppliers for this.

After changing the stuffing I decided to maintain the current set up. A failure seems more manageable with stuffing. Less all or nothing. The tube is wire reinforced Heavy marine exhaust tube. Not sure why it was set up this way. I will consider the use of single tube. I ill look closely at it next week. It's all new to me having no experience with marine inboards. Im a Aircraft Mechanic, large turbines, etc. Some of the marine applications amaze me. Almost no design thought to servicing systems.
Nice to learn new things though.

That explains the twist in the tube. Replacement with real stuffing hose is critical, please look to replace this before dropping the engine back in.
exhaust hose is not safe in this usage.
