Wow. Thank you for sharing the details of your experience, it is something we all fear I am sure.

I just wanted to say I am so sorry for your loss and the experience you had. I am glad you are okay, that is most important. It does sound like someone could restore her, and I'm glad to hear that you are trying to make that happen.

Ken,
Don't know if you want to fix the boat. But I have seen boats that were damaged worse (from the description) that were brought back. Have you seen any of the work done by Tim Lackey? He is a wizard at boat repair and restoration. I don't know how far his order book is backed up, but he has the ability to work miracles. You can view his work at http://www.mityekcal.com
Like the rest of the Board, I am so sorry for your loss, but you survived. As a veteran of 32 years in the fire service, I can tell you no matter what happens, we counted it as a good day if the people were ok.
Best of luck,

Thanks Jerry. I am very glad I was awake and noticed the fire before it got totally out of hand. And, thanks for the suggestion.

I think all of us cannot but feel diminished when a great boat meets tragedy, especially outside of those expected from the sea itself. I feel you anguish and only hope Parfait is recalled to life!

Re: Cape Dory 36 "Parfait" project boat or salvage?
I too extend my condolences to Ken for his misfortune on a boat that he clearly put a lot of time, thought, and energy into. I would also like to offer a huge THANK YOU to Ken for his willingness to both sell her to me and to support my million and one questions.
As the next owner and care taker of Ken's Parfait, I first plan to replace the toasted control panel and electrical panel, as well as get the bilge pump(s) back in working condition and clean the boat. I may never get the smoke smell completely out, but the way I figure it, an older boat usually smells like diesel, holding tank, and/or bilge. Smoke is just another smell of similar significance. I'll reduce and control it as much as possible.
My objective is to have her sailing by mid August. I'll start a new message to post pics and show the progress for those that are interested.

Ken,
I am speechless. Such a sad event, thankfully you are ok. Boats can be replaced, good friends can't.
