Re. the boom vang, I use the cam at the boom and find it easy to reach, except when running, and pull down to tighten. It is also easy to release. Just a suggestion.

I use a 4:1, but only because Garhauer sells a complete setup with both blocks and 30 feet of line for $97, and this was cheaper than anything else I could find, including buying the blocks individually. I spent a long time in Bacon's trying to find something used I could rig up, but most of the stuff they had at the time was for larger boats. I got the Garhauer model 25UAB 4-1:

I have my vang with the cam cleat at the top. It's easier to get at and works well.

That is exactly the boom vang I bought for my Typhoon Weekender. It worked great. I also set it up with the cam cleat on top.

Today, I installed a new Garhauer boom vang 25US4-1 (bought at Strictly Sail at a discount ) on S/V Bali Ha'i (Cape Dory 25D) with the cam cleat at the top (just below the boom) on a bail bolted to the boom. Looks very good. I have two (2) quick disconnects at each end of the boom vang. I plan to use the boom vang as a "preventer" on downwind sails.

I have been very pleased with Garhauer products and service. I met the owners at Strictly Sail. Very nice folks.

Gentlemen, thank you for the photos. Being able to "see" your rigging options is so much easier than trying to visualize at an early hour in the morning, bleary eyed, with Gevalia running into my veins.

I have yet to drop my Ty in the water and will study with interest the various options you all have suggested.

I decided to stick with a 4:1 vang and bought a new block and fiddle block/cam from Harken to replace my exisitng stuff. The harken fiddle/cam has a revirsible cam allowing it to be located at the base of the mast and permitting the vang to be released by pulling upwards on the line. This avoids all the movement/loss of adjustment to be dealt with when the fiddle/cam is on the boom and provides peace of mind (at least for me) by providing the ability to reliably and quickly dump the vang.
