Typhoon weekender
Typhoon weekender
Want to install roller reefing for a genoa/jib on a Typhoon weekender. Any suggestions where and how much it would cost?

Re: Typhoon weekender
Bah Tom, I have the same vessel and the same interest. I am looking at the FF1 or FF2 by CDI which is an extremely economical roller furler. Look at this link:

I have a fractional rig so I think the FF1 is going to be my selection. However, not being the rigger, I am purchasing locally through a bonafide dealer and will have him do the hard part. I want the sensation, not the aggravation!

Well, the poor man's roller furling or reefing whichever way you want to do it can be somewhat utilized with your existing sail by installing a jib downhaul system. The jib down haul can reduce your sail area by fifty percent (if you have your main up) very quickly. If that is your premise. If you truly want roller furling, you have the cost of the unit, plus the cost of recutting your sail, as they have to flatten it out a bit and sew on a sacrificial strip, remove the hanks, and sew a luff welt, or you can just get a new sail cut. I fave a Harken system, probably would be a number "0" you'll get what you paid for. reefing with a roller furling sail is not the best unless you have a long genoa track to adjust the sheeting angle as the sails furls. Your leading edge of the sail gets thicker as you furl, so you take a performance hit on the leading edge, but it is convenient for sure. If you can live with the trade-offs then go for it. All told, with recutting your existing sail, probably ballpark 850, in my opinion. I had a jib downhaul on my Ty and it worked well for the jib and the genoa which were hank ons.

S/V Twig has a Schaefer snap furl. I did not pick it over the others. I just got a great deal on it and it appeared to make sense for the boat. Light weight and easy to install. We are in the second season with it. So far so good. As mentioned you will have to re-cut your present sails.

Re: Typhoon weekender
There is a lot of discussion about roller furling for a Weekender on the Discussion section however to reiterate, I have a weekender that I installed the FF1 on (purchased from Rigging Only). It takes only a couple of hours to do. With the small drum of the FF1 I have no problem with the 130% genny however you will want a smaller diameter furling line. The FF2 has a larger drum and is recommended for larger headsails. I have had this setup for 5 years and really like it. You will need to move your genny track farther forward to improve the sail shape when furled partly. I have not done this yet and feel that I lose about 5-10 degrees of pointing ability when the sail is partly furled however that is a rarity. If you do get the FF1 or FF2 get the ball bearing option. You will need a new forestay (send your existing one to Rigging Only so they can make the new one the correct length). Just talking about this makes me yearn for liquid water instead of the ice-boaters dream!

Re: Typhoon weekender
Dick,
What you describes concurs with the local dealer's estimates on set-up as well. My Ty has the genoa track on the toe rail at present and my vessel came with the 150% genoa but with hanks, ugh. So, I begged off for the present on cutting all that bronze off my genoa and will hank for a while until I feel I need to furl. I have to remember I'm not on my old Beneteau 473 anymore! At 20 tons, she needed every bit of genny she could find. But the CD Typhoon, is remarkably a heavy vessel. I'm going to "wait out" on my furl decision.
Would be very happy to see photos of your rigging of that however!
