Installing a fish finder on a CD22

I think I'd like to treat myself to a fish finder on my CD22!

I'm not sure why! I could buy plenty of fish for the cost of going fishing but what the heck.

Lawrence makes the X4 which looks good enough for me, do any of you have any recommendations for a fish finder for under $200.00?

Installation is my next consideration. When I look at the Lawrence installation PFD it really doesn't take into account that the unit might be installed on a sail boat. Installation along the center-line and close to the transom is not an option for me.

Because of the keel and the interior liner it seems my only choice for transducer location will be epoxied to the hull in the area under the cockpit where there is no liner.

I've read on other sites that mounting the transducer on the side of the hull will be problematic because the transducer will see the keel.

Good Old Boat recently had instructions about mounting a wet box. I planned to follow those instructions until I found that this fish finder does not have a similar transducer as the one in the instructions and until I buy the unit I won't be able to tell if a wet box solution will work.

Questions:

Will my planned location under the cockpit work for a fish finder and will the keel of the boat cause any problems with the display?

What would be the best way to level the transducer on the sloping hull?

This is not really an answer to your question, but with the CD22 that I'm buying- once the survey is done- it comes with the Lowrance
GPS/Chart Plotter with depth, and bottom I think. I have always wondered where the transponder part of the system is installed.
I care more about depth/bottom than I do GPS chart plotter. I have a hand held, and I prefer in-my-hand- charts.
I hope you get some answers that might relate to that.

On a side note- what do you do for an ice box on your 22?

Hi Matane,

I've been following your search for a CD and I hope this CD22 works out well for you. I couldn't be more pleased with mine.

The CD22 was designed to have a full size 1980's style picnic cooler behind the companionway stairs.

If you look just aft of the stairs you will most likely see fiddles to hold it in place.

I found a perfect one at a yard sale that didn't have a drain plug. I like it because I don't have to worry about the plug coming undone but you could always secure the plug with some strong tape. I expect the new full size picnic coolers are the same size but you can easily measure the fiddles before you buy.

Gary- Thanks so much! I plan to do what most don't do in the 22. Because of my location Miami-Keys, I am planning on doing long
trips, and one concern was..... having a cold drink of water once in a while, or keeping fish I caught a few days. There are plenty of
provisioning places.

Sorry I cant answer your fish finder question. I just know from my center consol fishing boats that you ran the transponder chord
under the deck and on my SeaCraft I was able to have it come out at the wiring harness. From there- no hiding the cord.
using attachments it ran down the outside of the transom, and attached - if I remember correctly- to a flat/horizontal position
so that the transponder itself was 90 degrees to the bottom. Mine had depth and bottom relief- which for fishing or diving
is great. I never used the fish feature- I don't think mine was really detailed enough. I don't know where you are- but bottom relief
helped me more than anything.

Channel Is. That would be cool. You could go a bit north and go Great White fishing!
